Yes
I am wondering, is it just me, or is this common practice? I am at the match, clearly an official tog, I have a good rapport with the other press togs. Then at the start of the match, this one does this. Is he just a bit thoughtless, or do pro-togs make a habit of walking in front of others?

not as bad as if he hadn't ducked

what did you expect. that he would stand around and wait? you might have stood there for 20 minutes?

did he screw up all your shots or just that one?

if he'd walked in front of a major event I'd understand but it's only a bunch of guys shaking hands and will look the same a second later

i wouldn't worry about it

Totally disagree with you.
They don't stand there shaking hands for 20 minutes, that was a one off shot as the OP had waited untill they were all shaking hands as they moved down the line.

I don't do football, but motorsport.

Space permitting, I try and move behind other photographers

If not, and time permitting, then I'll wait for an all clear.

It would have to be a pressing matter to dive below another photographer visibly taking a shot. Sometimes you're in a bit of a scrum, so sometimes you have little choice, but courtesy costs nothing.

Well, I'd deem it polite to walk round the BACK of other togs if I'd got the shots I needed, not waltz in front of them. May be I'm not pushy enough! Just seemed like bad manners.

Fully agree with you, bad manners indeed. I mean, he only had to stand and wait for about 30 seconds (at the very most) or just go around behind you for pities sake, idiot.:bonk: You do get some pretty rubbish 'press' togs at lower level games.

Bad form...if he'd done that at a premier league or football league match he'd have had a 400L upside his head...several in fact.

Walk behind, you never know whether the tog's zoomed in on one player or is getting a "context" shot...so stay safe and walk behind.

As in all walks of life, there are those that care and those that don't.Not making excuses, this is a big no no.At a match recently, there was this chap who came and stood blocking shots to my left:naughty:.Not wanting to make a noise,i moved a couple of meters to my right. He was soon told to sit down by God.Not having a stool,he sat on his Cam'bag. The next time the action came real close,he fell off his make shift stool.Made me smile lots:lol::lol:

which is why I don't do football!!!

I just didn't see it as an interesting shot that I'd care whether I got or not

of course if they'd done it at one of my weddings I'd give him a good kicking :bonk:

These things happen even among 'us' media at airshows. You'd think being in the press 'enclosure' would shield you from rude idiots like that (who attend in there thousands of course) but it doesn't. I've lost count of the number of times block you and stand so close as to almost cut off your field of vision left and right, particulary at Waddington and Fairford all from so called press!:bang:

You always have selfish idiots, sadly.

That's irrelevant, no photographer should ever knowingly block another no matter how they regard what they are doing.

Definately bad manners, he could easily have walked behind you.
I occasionally have problems at road races, where family will stand right in front of you to look down the road for their rider, a polite excuse me normally works, but one lady did ignore me and stood in the road, so I took a nice shot of some riders coming up the road with her large backside in the frame :) she didn't do it again & I managed to move before the main finish.

Depends on the circumstances, I've been in many scrums and it's not pretty, one of the reasons I walked away from press photography as I couldn't be bothered with the agro.

Bad manners at all levels, whatever the event or scene, you click to get a shot, not a gimp. He ducks as he knows he is in the way but too impolite to wait or go round. :nono:

Good manners are free and should be used in copious amounts.

You were shooting a 70-200 yes? If so he wasn't to know which end of it you were using... also did he stand there for hours or did he turn round and notice you were there and quickly try to get out the way?

I always try to keep out the way as much as I can and never intentionally spoil anyone's shot, but ultimately you have a job to do - just the same as the TV crews that sometimes get in my way :D

Read this thread and passed it over as it was labelled pro-togs but on reflection shouldn't this be any tog!

If someone has lined up a shot and is stood there with a camera surely it's common courtesy to avoid getting in the way!

If I had a shot lined up I would be mightly pee'd off is someone walked in front of the lens whether I was being paid for it or not!

I doubt if it was intentional - these things hapen - we have no idea how quickly the OP took the shot - he might have been on the move before she raised the camera - I think she is living up to her name! No doubt the OP took a burst so she'll have a clear one - if not well she should have! Much worse things happen in press scrums - you don't make excuses for not getting the shot!

Which bit is irrelevant, the fact that I admitted I don't know what to do at a football match and said so or the fact that I said I wouldn't have worried as I didn't see it as important?

I thought I was implicitly saying 'it just goes to show, everyone has a different perspective' but obviously I'd better say it explicitly

"IT JUST GOES TO SHOW, EVERYONE HAS A DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVE"

By the way, how do you know he did it knowingly? It looks to me like he's trying to get out of the way (not very well of course) so he may have been walking and suddenly realised. What should he have done then, not tried to get out of the way?

He is not a member here by any chance? :D

He shouldn't of done that, he knew what he was doing otherwise he wouldn't of ducked, (if that makes sense).

Ha ha. I hope not. The name on his sweatshirt sleeve said something like "Andy the Photographer" - wasn't YOU was it?

I have track access at the Reebok not as a tog but I always walk behind anyone, If not possible due to tight space down the east stand (some sit is stupid positions) I will always wait till they say I can go just so I don't knock them or anything.

Perhaps he thought by ducking he'd get out of shot.

I've never shot at a football match before, but I'm curious, how much freedom do photographers get, or are they just designated a specific area of the sideline?

Bad Manners. I always try to go around other photographers or where possible wait till they say I can go past. As someone has said if he didn't know what he was doing he wouldn't have ducked.

It happens...looks to me like he's trying to stay out of shot...maybe there wasn't room to go behind...?
I'd wait a couple of seconds in his case but if you were making a meal of it - you say you were photographing every handshake? - I probably wouldn't have waited either if I thought I needed to be somewhere else...
But I'd have moved closer to you and got lower so you could at least shoot over me...

Looks to me like he started to move without thinking and then realised, hence the duck. I've done this before without thinking, concentrating at shooting with my 24-105, moved then realised someone is behind me with a 70-200.

I just waved and say sorry.

I've had rude. I used to regularly shoot a local football team and at the cup final the local press tog deliberately was standing in front of me because the team were responding to me.

Fine I let him get on with it, then shot my shots, then got out a couple of bottles of fizz I'd bought in case they won and shot as they opened and sprayed. Press tog spotted this and came running back and tried to barge me over/out the way. This time I stood my ground and made my opinions very vocally known!

I am by no means a pro, but I attended the London Tattoo Convention last year and there was one obvious pro who was a pain in the bum for me. I was trying to shoot a gir,l who he had clearly finished shooting (she had relaxed and was chatting to people, he had his camera down and was talking to a fellow tog) as soon as I got myself in place to take a couple of shots he just walked over stood right in front of me and decided to start shooting again

You often find this and I've done it myself on occasion...You'll exhaust all of your own ideas, then another phot will spot something good and start snapping and it'll spark more ideas of your own...
In fact I always watch the other togs at an event to make sure they're not getting something that I've missed - that might be the money-shot after all...

Now I don't mind that at all...................infact I think most of us are guilty of doing this and I don't have a problem with it. :D

But it was the fact that he stood directly in front of as I was shooting that got my back up a little (and I am not a confident person and it really got to me). I mean, stand next to me by all means or ask me if I would mind moving over a little. I was shooting for pleasure not profit as he would have been, but to stand in front of me to prevent me shooting was very rude I think.

You should have said something - or better still, move round in front of him - most of us are chancers, but if you stand your ground, you suddenly get a lot more respect...

Sounds like I need to get a little more backbone and stand my ground :boxer:
