Hi,

Professional studios, what do they use for flooring?

Do they offer the reflective that so many of us are aiming for? Do they shoot full length, a lot of looking at websites is showing only down to the knees?

Am i doing the right thing in aiming to achieve a perfect white floor?

The reaspm i am asking is that i am wasting so much time attempting to get a perfect reflective floor, that i wonder if its worth its while. Do i knock it on the head and shoot just on paper/vinyl flooring? what sort of effect do these have on shadows reflections? do clients look like they are floating?

I have made a few posts tonight, with trying to direct my studio and what i am attempting to achieve, and would love some advice to help me get my head around where i want to go with my studio setup.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Flooring wise Hard floors all round, this helps the paper lay flat and you can then tape it down and remove it easiy enough.

The reflective floor you speak off at a quese would just be a large sheet of perspex/acrylic which you could have for people to use just slap it down on your infinity curve or many coloured paper rolls.

Do you have an Inifity curve, if your looking for a chavbackground (to quote the man himself) then you really want too look at building a large curve into your studio this way you can use it for pure white, off white and then chuck your bit of acrylic down and you then have some shiny reflections :).

Surely only you know which direction you want to go in, call me stupid but if you've started out not knowing what your going to do then there isn't much hope for the future.

Take a look at this THREAD on another forum to show you rough idea.

^^ I think I should add that the link is to Purestorm and contains some NWS images. ;)

Have a look at my site and you'll see a picture of my cove - www.loudandflashy.com

The floor is made of mdf on 2" joists to raise it off the concrete floor (warmer) and the whole cove is painted with brilliant white matt emulsion. Easy to touch up the paint when kids have left trainer marks or I've had a car on the set leaving tyre marks.

Easy to light a chavtastic 'venture' style shot but equally easy to light with gels or not light at all!!

If I want reflections then I lay a large sheet of clear acrylic down.

The cove itself is made from ply formed around some simple bracing.

Cheap to build, easy to maintain, very versatile!!

If you want to visit let me know.

Cheers

Yeah built it myself with a friend helping to hold things in place! Took a day to build, then painted it the next day.

Very simple construction, didn't worry about a perfect finish as being so large with a good shooting length it all goes nicely out of focus lit or unlit.

So a pro studio will go down the route of perspex for reflections?

Hi studio looks superb, well done, can I ask what paint you used for the background (instead of paper backdrop)

Hi

It's just matt white emulsion. The first time I painted it I used Wickes own brand 'professional trade', but since then when I touch it up it's just anything cheap and chearful from the local DIY shop!

The studio has been used by videographers as well and they love the matt emulsion as it gives a very flat light (no hot spots).

Just wondering what cost is involved with the infinity wall?

thanks

No idea! I'd have to dig my receipts out, but I got everything from wickes, priced it online then phoned the local store manager and got another 10% discount (was buying a lot of other stuff).

Mine consists of:
4x 8'x4' ply 6mm
12x 8'x4' mdf 18mm

Lots of 2x2 rough cut timber lengths!
