Hi All

Hope you can help.

My printer has packed up. I only use it to print text mostly and some odd photos here and there. My wife has a HP wireless laserjet printer which she used for work. I thought i would not get another printer and use the HP for document printing and get photos printed at work. My problem is the my PC has no wifi but is instead hard wired into the router.

Can I print from my PC? I don't understand networks etc and can not find anything relating to my problem on the tube or interweb. Is there a solution?

Many thanks

That is just what I do with my Canon and the HP Laser i.e. neither is direct connected to my PC.

As far as I recall...............in both cases the printer installation instructions start with connecting via the USB port but during the setup process you select the WiFi (wireless) option........thereafter you disconnect the USB cable and use the WiFi 'connection.

So, IMO check that you have most up to date and appropriate installer downloaded from the HP website and again AFAIK you should find online instructions of how to install it as needed.

PS my Laser id the HP P1102W

HTH :)

Thought he meant his PC didn't have wireless so why would you need to follow the instructions for wireless connection ?
If I remember rightly I used to hardwire the PC to the router and pick up the printer think I had to install some software, but it's been a while since I did it

My printer is done by WiFi, but bothe the rinter and all computers connect over the WiFi network, so I don't see that you shouldn't be able to do it.

My PC does not have a WiFi card but it is hardwired to the Router (as is both Andy's and your PC) and for printer installation purposes you first connect by USB so that the installer recognises the printer's presence but then the set up process 'tells the driver' to use the TCP/IP as the 'printer port' i.e. the WiFi via the routers WiFi functionality.

None of my PCs are hardwired to the router any more all are now wifi, but back when one was it just needed the software put on the relevant machine and it worked fine, things must have moved on since then

As long as both printer and computer are physically connected to the network then yes, you should be able to print. I'd use the printer setup tool in windows to find the printer on the network, and the computer *should* be able to download the drivers from the internet.

As an alternative just buy a USB wireless dongle for a few quid & use that.

yep this, just use the add printer wizard
basically all your stuff is on the same IP subnet so yes

My PC is in my office and the printer is in the dining room. No chance to get a cable that long....:(

I'll see if there is any software to install from the site. Hopefully that will work (y)

WiFi dongle for the PC, but most recent routers have wifi incorporated. Which router do you have>

Yes. I do exactly that. My printer (an Epson) is on the wifi in my wife's study. My PC is hardwired to the network and has no wifi.

  1. Get the printer working over wifi on your wife's machine (it sounds like you have that sorted - that's the fiddly bit)
  2. Go to Printers & Scanner in your settings and press the + button.
  3. Follow the instructions
It should "just work".

I done it!!! Wahey. I downloaded some software from HP and it did the rest.

I feel al bit of a knob now!

Thanks for all the advice peeps :)

I have a new HP arriving today as my Epson has died. All the reviews say great printer but awkward to set up :) Glad you got it sorted.

A quick question , we have the same set up, did you need to install the HP drivers on your PC?

HPSmart gives me a lot of ARRGGGHHHHH.

We have an HP wireless printer. It will print colour from a computer with a fresh install of software, but after a short period prints mono only. There are no settings that can be changed which make a difference - only uninstalling & reinstalling. We have the £1.99 a month deal for replacement ink & I can't be bothered to change it right now, but the printer & software is a royal PITA. Won't buy another HP.

Weirdly my old printer has started working again!

Bloody technology :D

Yeah. As above, I just got a new HP. 5 mins to open box, unpack and get working on the network - awesome. 45 mins to subscribe to the ink :(

It’s jealousy, now it’s noticed you’ve transferred your affections to another printer. Previously it was just sulking :).
