A friend of mine wants a portrait and states she already has a frame at home measuring 27inches by 23 1/2 inches. I believe the frame was measured on the outer side rim. Should I go ahead and take this picture what sort of measurements am I looking to export its final production to jpeg using Lightroom. I'm useless when it comes to the workings out on these things. ?
 
First thing you need to do is measure what size the frame will accept...ie the inside (knowing the outer measurements means nothing unless you know the width of the frame itself).

Then work out how big a mount you want around the print, e.g. for a mount of 2 inches on each size the print height would be frame height minus 4 inches, and width would be frame width minus 4 inches. This will let you work out the aspect ratio of the photo so you can take a photo to suit that

Brilliant thanks, I may have to repost to make sure I got it right, I also need to look at Lightroom print settings to get my head around it. Don't suppose you have an example of how I should do this using Lightroom?
 
Sorry I don't use Lightroom to print. I use DSCL for my prints so I export a jpg from Lightroom at the correct size for the print
 
Sorry that's what I meant. I use Lightroom to edit and then export to jpeg, then save to sdhc card and take to the printers. I don't understand how to adjust the sizes in Lightroom accordingly, I must find an online tutorial somewhere
 
Back again. Change of mind. I have taken the pics and decided to have one portrait printed onto canvas size A2.

As a newbie to Lightroom 4 I went into the print module and chose to print to jpeg. I setup my page dimensions to A2 and filled the blank page with the picture. I then saved it to my desktop. I now have an image file which is 15.6mb in size and it states the resolution is 7016 x 4962.

Is this the correct way to do this to print on this scale or have I done it wrong. To keep things simple I am choosing a canvas with no wrap around.

For the future I will want to add a watermark somewhere so need to figure where to put it, and work out those dimensions. I may need to visit my local snappy snaps store and ask for their guidance.

As for the above I just really need to know have I made my jpeg correctly to take to a store to print, or should I have done it differently ?
 
A2 pixel size for printing is 7020px X 4950px so you're not far away
 
Thanks. The more I look for answers the more things seem to keep getting in the way. I have just read a huge introduction to aspect ratios. It's the first time someone has explained it in simple terms without expecting me to know these things. However it also means I need to go back into LR and make some adjustments now lol !
 
If you're getting a canvas made up, make sure you know the sizes that the printing company requires. Many will require a certain amount of bleed on the image in order to fold the canvas round a block/wooden support.

Bleed is the extra amount of print area you need to allow around the edge of the final size to allow for folding or cutting. If this area includes part of your image, you need to make allowances for it.
Some canvas printers will make this bleed area white or black by default, but you need to be aware of what they do in order to avoid surprises. Most printers will have this info in their FAQ or artwork requirements sections of their websites.
