Printing Question- edge to edge or include border?

Hi,

When printing, either for yourself or more appropriately for sale to others, do you print edge to edge or include a border (to assist with mounting). If you are including a border do you have a common rule of thumb as to the size of the border. So for example if you are printing an A4 print and include a border would you say a 0.4" border around would be enough ... Would the border need to increase in relation to the size of the print?

Any advantages or perhaps more importantly disadvantages to border vs. borderless ...

Unless printing 6x4 family snaps, I always leave a border. This is primarily because I mount them. The size of border is dictated by the size of the aperture in the mount which I tend to buy pre-cut from Cotswold Mounts (either A3 or 15x10). When mounting, I tend to do it edge to edge without an 'inner' border i.e. I don't leave any white space between the bevelled edge of the mount and the edge of the print.

Printing edge to edge is perfectly valid, but I guess you need to consider what you are going to do with it once printed. In my experience, it's best to start with the end use in mind and work backwards from there to decide how big to print and whether you need to print edge to edge or not.
 
Depends on the particular circumstances, but I often add a border of a few centimetres, using a colour which echoes the bulk of the print, so that I can cut it more precisely for mounting. The choice of the border colour should be under your control.
 
Never had anything printed with a border for the last ten years
