Printing on CDs

Just wondering if you need a special CD or DVD to print on them? Canon IP4200 printer if that makes any difference.

I only buy printable blanks now. Don't actually print that many but they are easy to write on too. Only problem is DVDs and CDs look the same so I have to write 'DVD' on it as well

Just write on the shiny side with a felt-tip...

Is the dye on each not a different colour? All my DVDs are purple but my printable CDs are a greeny silver.
