Edit My Images
Yes
I took some photographs of my neighbours kids, did a little pp in lightroom 2 then handed over a disc with all the photos (jpeg) on.

They then took the disc to a photo printers who printed them off at 6 x 4 inch so her and her husband could view the images before deciding which ones they want to print and enlarge. What they received from the printers was a bit of a shock, heads half chopped off vital bits of bodies missing etc. They were a real mess.

I then realised I need to resize the photos on the disc to print at the sizes they want...I have been given a list of various sizes for the final printed images thinking it was just resizing using canvas size in Photoshop! I have tried a couple of quick test prints with the same result.

Can some one please advise how I can ensure the photo print shop will produce the images in the sizes required?

I have LR2, CS4 and my old copy of PS7 so any of these apps is OK.

Cheers...Kevin.

If you cropped the pics to a different ratio then this would cause a problem. I think your camera has a 3:2 ratio (same as 6:4) so a non-cropped pic shouldnt be a problem if they were printed at 6 x 4. But were they...??

Compact cameras generally have a different ratio (something like 5:4) which is squarer. Some places print using 6 x 4.5 rather than 6 x 4 to cater for the masses/majority. If they printed your pics at this ratio then then there would be bits missing on the sides (or top & bottom on a portrait) as the picture would have to be resized/enlarged slightly to fit the 6 x 4.5 ratio

Thanks Vinny

I think you are right, I did crop most of them quite heavily to get the desired image.

So unless I, for example, did the printing myself where I would adjust the image for the print output I specifically wanted this may well be a lost cause! The print shop my neighbough is using will just stick the images through a machine, correct?

They are also doing a couple of acrylics for them so they may be more hand produced than the other images.

I think I have deleted the originals as well, my hard drive is full so I am deleting all my non keepers now.

Thanks...kevin.

well i hope for your sake you didnt delete them, you should go through the originals resizing them maintaining the aspect ratio. In most programs holding the shift key when resizing will maintain the ratio.
If you dont have the originals you will have to convert your cropped images to correct aspect ratio which will involve more cropping which could be a problem if you have already cropped tightly.

You should seriously look at a proper workflow using lightroom (which is non distructive) which helps if you do make a mistake. It also means you can keep multiple copies with different setting but with next to no extra space used on disk.

Thanks Vinny

I have managed to get the original images back...so how do I now crop for printing of the various sizes that my neighbour wants in PS or lightroom? I take it I now crop first before I do any post processing at all and stck rigidly to that image size?

Cheers....Kevin.

You could simply supply your neighbour with some images cropped to 3:2 so they can get them printed for viewing, Or show them the images in Lightroom, on the computer. Then when they want to print move them to the print module and select the size they want there.

You can move the images around in the desired print size so you can crop just as they want.

In Lightroom I do all the processing etc, then create a snapshot at the original aspect ratio. Then when I go to export I crop to the desired aspect ratio (and create another snapshot) then export at the print size.

crop to what looks good in LR, then print a jpeg at the same size as the paper req 300dpi sharpening for the paper type ect

If I use the print module in LR to size my images (Using the scale rulers top and side) can I the export this to jpeg, will it export at the dimensions and dpi I set in LR?

cheers....Kevin.

Use the print to jpeg option ;)

Although I find it just as easy to use the export dialogue.

you should be using the develop module to do the crop and editing, then export.
The print module is designed for actually printing.
