Hi

Some of the older members on here will have had to suffer me wittering on about constantly dark prints from my Epson 950 printer. But if you've escaped I'll recap :D

I use an old epson 950 printer which is capable of some stunning results if you know where to kick it, but images have always been much darker to the point of having to crank the image brightness greatly in photoshop and hoping the printed image will at least look similar.

I bought a Pantone Eye One at the focus on imaging show to help address the issue, the screen was improved on both my main pc and the laptop with colours looking more natural, so then the next stage was to get prints that look like the screen.

Still awake ......

I had a search round the t'interweb and stumbled across This place. The site isn't outstanding, but everything you need is there including step by step help with screen grabs so you can get your head around whats needed.

I printed off the test charts as described and allowed them to dry for a couple of days, they were darker than the screen as expected and were sent off in the post to pure profiles for measuring.

I made two copies of the charts to allow side by side comparison as they don't send your charts back. :(

The profile was emailed back as soon as my cheque cleared.

I decided to print another test chart using the new profile, making sure I selected the new profile before hitting print button ;)

The print is now drying on my window sill, but I can say now that I'm very pleased with the result so far.

The print is almost exactly the same as the screen, I say almost............because nothing is ever going to be an exact match between screen and paper but it's very close indeed and 100% better than the prints I'm used to seeing :woot: :woot:

I always use Epson Inks and premium photo glossy paper, so I only had the one profile created.

So, I can wholeheartedly recommend Pure Profiles

Not the cheapest but they do exactly what they say on the tin......I mean screen

Hope it helps someone :)

Thanks for that... just had my video card replaced and was about to start tinkering again with my 2 monitors (CRT & LCD) and the Huey (also bought at Focus) - so will get the printer profile done as well this time, esp as I've never had a printer profile set up for my Epson 1290s.

How long did it take from sending the prints off to getting the profile?

Could have got one for a tenner on....maybe not :)

i know i could have got one cheaper ;) but i like to choose my own supplier from honest and open traders.

TRU.......I don't use paypal, so i had to send a cheque which took a week to clear as normal.

I would imagine almost next day turnaround after the charts have been received at their end.

also check with them on the 1290......i read somewhere that that model is a difficult one to get consistent results with.

Hi

I too have felt this pain of printing naff colours
so I invested in custom profiles over the tinterweb, (epson 870 RIP) and very well they worked too.
I now have my own Gretag Macbeth Eye1, so profile my own kit, £20 for a custom profile sounds good value, the charts have 918 patches so it should be an excellent profile,
however I have noticed all the ones available are RGB profiles, I find that CMYK profiles - 1120 patches - give better shadow detail, anyone else had similar experiences?

dave:thinking:

The pure profiles site says that they use the GMb Eye one pro and can do CMYK profiles on request, I guess they are a little different from the norm and cost a little more.

If i had a spare grand, I'd happily get my own profiler and do profiles for every ink/paper combo I'd decided to use.
But, I haven't so I'm stuck with using Epson ink and premium glossy papers :D
