Going to get some stuff printed for the first time, so have done a little reading.

I'm going to order from DSCL have have downloaded their icc profiles.

I'm going to do some A4 test prints to start with.

I have exported the first image from lightroom and set the size to 3510 x 2475 according to this page: http://www.dscolourlabs.co.uk/imageresizing.cfm

The exported jpeg reports a size of 3510 x 2340 @ 300 dpi
I think this is because the source image was cropped slightly to a size of 5043 x 3362 - would that be the reason ?

Is the only way of correcting this to change the crop ?

You've cropped it wrong or have resized it wrong.

Set your crop tool to A4 (210mm x 297mm) and crop your pic to suit.
 
If you don't set your crop tool to A4 it won't print correctly.

What software are you using?
 
Lightroom

Just did a test, I'm wrong - the straighten crop seems to have no impact.
