I was wondering if an 8MP camera would be able to print on an A3 page at 180ppi?

Looking at getting a starter DSLR but need it to be able A3 prints.

Thanks

Short answer, yes. You can upscale using photoshop if the camera won't do A3 natively.

I'll leave someone else to do all the maths to show you how to work it all out.. Too much sun for me today!

KK ive been using my Bros camera 400D 10.1MP i believe and how ive been doing it was dragging image from the picture onto a blank A3 image.

I am familiar with PS so someone lemme know if its a hassle to do it.
Its for college mainly and its not just straight print from original file aswell. i will be dragging layers around etc.

You can make a A3 @200DPI with out doing anything to change its size

Thank you mate.

Im assuming you mean PPI? I work with PPI as its what college does

Anyone have a 8MP camera and could send a raw file to me?

It is possible, I've printed up to A2 and both my cameras are 8.2MP, however I almost always interpolate up or down to get the image dimensions I want at 360ppi (or 180 if it is a really big print).

The 400D gives a 3888 pixel * 2592 pixel file.

If you want to use 180 PPI (Pixels per Inch) you can print up to 3888/180 = 21.6 inches by 2592/180 = 14.4 inches without interpolation.

As A3 is about 16.5 inches by 11.7 inches you could print at 220 PPI without interpolation, 3888/220 = 17.6 inches, 2592/220 = 11.78 inches

If you crop then you will have to check using the new pixel size.

FYI The correct term is PPI as we are talking about pixels divided by inches but some programs, and people, still use DPI (Dots per Inch) which is an older term.
It can get confusing as ink jet printers spray dots of ink and you can set the printer DPI which tells it how many dots of ink to spray per inch!
