Calling all IT pros here. Has anyone done a Prince2 certification? Any advise is appreciated.

Many thanks in advance.

Test

Not myself but i know a few people who have. My advice would be to go for it. Anything that gives you the edge over fellow collegues is worth it. Also gives the right impression to your employers.

Will it be OK to ask if you could provide me with info of few people whom you know who have done this. It will be a great help mate.

You looking for details of how to sign up??

The few people i know of that have done it are project managers in the company i work for. It's sort of a standard qualification to take to get to that position within the company. I'll ask my mate who is going to start it soon how she signed up, but as i say i think the company deals with all the admin stuff.

Obtained my Prince certification 2 years ago, you have a re-sit every 5 years, Mine was paid for by the company.

Most companies pay for their employees to take this as they class it as an investment.

Loads of companies that supply the training.

Worth getting as your chargeable daily rate with this qualification would be anything from 225.00 a day to 400.00 depending on experience and industry.

cheers

I did it about two years ago and paid for it myself. I had taken VR and was having a year out before going into contracting.

I had lots of PM experience but no qualifications so decided to go the Prince route as being the most widely respected route. I did the fast track version where you do the Foundation exam on day three and the Practionioner on day five.

I understand that the Practitioner exam is now multi-choice rather than the previous essay based version.

As Shutterman says, definately worth doing if you already have Project Management experience as it can push up your daily rate.

Hi mfwild13,

Do you recollect which training institute you went through while doing this course? :)

Not sure what you meant by this. Do you have to keep sitting for a refresher course every 5 years?

yes(ish) - depends on how good you are at self tutoring

most things like this require a level of recertification if only because the content changes and the terminology used changes.

ITIL is a pain in the arse for this.

if youa re seriously thinking of going for any decent PM role then P2 (and knowing how to apply it in the real world) is a huge advantage

Me too!
Project Management is what I get paid for and I expected to be made redundant 2 years ago from my current company so took the qualification to make myself more 'marketable'.

A number of accredited companies will allow you to pay for the course once to get you through the exam and if you fail will not charge you for a second course. Any accredited company with a very high pass rate would be recommended, Prince site has a list of the accredited training companies.

The course is very intensive, depending on your existing knowledge. All the people who passed on mine were already in project management, the two (of 12) that failed were intending to move into project management. Also, I managed to get hold of the book before the course started and had done three weeks of prep beforehand which proved to be a very good investment of time. If the exam was easy, then anyone could just turn up and pass it which would be meaningless anyway.

I did prince2 with quanta training in worcester back in september. Never done project management or anything likeit before just fancied doing the course and I passed first time so they must be alright at teaching it. It's only a 50% pass mark, even my nephew could manage that and he's 7.

FWIW don't worry if you don't know the prince methodology or anything about proj man. Plenty of proj managers on my course struggled with trying to reconcile prince with how their company did things, something that wasn't a problem in my situation.

I did come across this website and found it as one of the most shoddiest website ever created. It seemed like a child has been given some crayons......:)

How was the teaching anyways? :naughty:

I fully agree.

Pretty good actually. The guy was very knowledgeable and also clearly knew what was needed to pass both exams and made sure the teaching was focussed on that.

Yes, I've done it, it teaches one valuable lesson and one only.

Don't be afraid to think about stopping a project every once in a while.

I did it in 2002 and again in 2007 with guys Insights in Basildon as they are local to me.

Company paid both times, definitely worth doing, just read and understand the manual in detail is all that's required to pass the foundation or practitioners exams in my opinion but the course was invaluable to go through practice papers.

Hi,

My friend’s girlfriend done it couples of months ago with a top IT training provider called Firebrand Training. I think they currently provide Prince2 simulation exam at no cost. I would also suggest you read this book to get tune your uderatnding what exactly Prince2 is -Managing Successful Projects with PRINCE2 Manual, ISBN: 9780113310593. The Prince2 exam for the foundation course is one hour long and includes a 75-questions multiple choice paper, you’ll need to successfully answer 38 questions correctly. The practitioner on the other hand is 3 hours long and is based on scenarios each outlining different areas of project management, each of the 9 questions is worth 40 marks giving you total marks of 360 to aim for, needing 180 to pass. There is a Prince2 training practise exam available if you are interested.

I hope this helps you question.

I bailed out of the P2 course and never completed it for the certification, all the other PM's in the office are certified though. Have to say that in the 12 years I've been involved in Project/Product Management, I've yet to work on one that fits the P2 Methodology so like most things in life a flexible approach is required. That said, and despite not finishing the course The bits I did learn have come in handy time and time again - Well worth doing if only for the market value it adds, there's a lot of PM's out there so it's always competetive.

Typical project managers.
The OP was Jan 2008 and they are only just replying :D:D

and yes I did do Prince.
