When i buy primes or zooms i always follow few things:
- The lens i buy is highly rated either prime or lens
- The lens i will buy will serve my need or have coverage
- Even the lens i buy that is not of need it should be a high quality or highly recommended/reviewed to buy it
- Watching you or many photography forums samples and impressions, you all saving me money if i want to buy something
So, if i will buy a prime, first i have to see how good is this prime, second, i try if possible to buy a prime that is not covered by one of my zooms unless this prime is something my zooms can't do, such as 300 2.8IS or TS-E lenses or Macro, and i don't need to buy all zooms or lenses there even if i have $$$ millions, to me 5-6 zooms with finest 4-6 primes will be overkill but happy to have, i can have 10 zooms and 8 primes but i will end up using 2-4 primes and 4-6 zooms at most.
Now, i will list my zooms that i like and think they are really good regardless how expensive or how quality they are:
1. 16-35 2.8 mk1
2 - 24-70 2.8 mk1 [i have 24-105 as backup too]
3 - 70-200 [i had mk1 before but sold it to get mkII]
4- 100-400 mk1
I have some more no need to mention as above
From above, all lenses served me well, just i need to be lucky now so i can sell those mk1 and get mk2 or newer versions better quality.
Primes i have:
1. Canon 100 macro
2. Canon 50 1.8 and 1.4
3. Canon 300 f2.8Is mk1
4. Canon TS-E 17 and 24II
5. Canon 135L
6. Canon 15 fisheye
Also i have some more prime lenses but i don't need to mention more
Again, all above lenses are really fine amazing lenses, i don't feel i need to upgrade them except if i just want mkii or newer version, macro lens is terrific sharp, 300 is now serving me well on 1DX, and both TS-E became my main lenses now since i used them since last year, i just only wish to have 400 or 500 or 600 only for birds, but if i buy a zoom such as 150-600 i may not think seriously about super tele prime.
