Hi guys. This my first post so here goes!! I am fairly new to photography and am trying to get to grips with all technicalities. Three years ago I purchased a second hand Nikon D50, which I have been learning with. The camera itself is sufficient for what I need, but I have discovered I need a faster lens for taking photos of groups (I am currently using the kit lens Nikkor AF-S DX 18-55mm 3.5-5.6G). I would like to buy and 50mm prime lens and am looking at the Nikkor AF-S 50mm 1.8G. I notice that this is not a DX lens. My question is: Do I need to buy a DX lens?? I understand that the DX range gives smaller frame but I'm not sure if I can use a 'non-DX' lens on my camera?!? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Yes you can use any non DX AF-S lens on the D50. The 50mm f1.8 is very nice, may also be worth checking out the 35mm DX AF-S f1.8 too.

Thanks for your reply. I did look at the 35mm DX but to be honest I wouldn't know which to choose. I only thought the 50mm as I read that it's a good setting to shoot portraits :/

for portraits you might want a bit longer, 85mm are very good for that

Are you forgetting the D50 is crop? The 50mm on crop is a pretty good portrait lens (a bit like the 85 on FF ;) ).

that's why I didn't say 135mm or 200mm ;)

Why do you need a faster lens for groups? Usually just the opposite, as you need a good amount of depth of field to get everyone sharp, more like f/8 than f/1.8.

Unless you perhaps mean pop goups/gigs?

Thanks everyone. As I understand it, the faster lens will help with shooting with available light meaning a slighter faster shutter speed (as the higher the f number the slower the shutter speed - on aperture priority) and also sharper pictures than my kit lens.

Very true. One thing to look at is what focal length you have used for group shots when using your 18 - 55. If you tend to use much less than 50 for majority of time then a 50 may not be the correct prime and you may be better off with a 30, 35 etc,.
