Yes
I have got a nikon d3100 and have the kit lens and a tamron 300mm lens, I have had some luck on my football bets and won £200 and I'm thinking of going out today and buying a 35 mm prime lens, are they worth buying.

35mm is a more useful walkabout focal length on a crop camera than the ever popular nifty fifty. And Nikon makes quite a nice 35 1.8 for a bit less than that money.

I have the Nikon 35mm 1.8 on my D3100 and am very very pleased with it.

Regards.

I've just bought one of these 1.8 35mm Nikon lenses and they really get you thinking more about your shots. The dof and image quality's fantastic.

50mm f1.4G great for portrait and street

On your D3, yes... 35mm on a crop is ~50mm effective focal length (for 35mm). I like my 50mm, but have been tempted by the 35 for a while now.

For reasons stated above the 35mm f/1.8 has an effective 52mm focal length on a crop sensor body. In my experience it's produced my best portrait shots with some pleasing bokeh when it's wide open.

Definitely worth the money I think.

Edit: full frame > crop sensor

I agree with you guys, 35mm is perfect on crop bodies and very versatile.

The added icing on the cake is that both the Nikon and Canon variants offer superb image quality, even wide open, for very little cost.

Jim, would you say the 35mm is better than the nifty fifty? (Got to ask Jim as he is my guru! :D)

Yes by far. I love the 50 but the 35 is so much sharper wide open. It's a great little lens!

I bought a 35 f1.8 yesterday and am going out to play with it now :)

Post some pics when you have the chance

pesky weather ... i didn't get the chance to get anything worth posting (although, that hasn't always stopped me before :D)

I took these this morning

Check out Camera Price buster..... you shouldn't need to spend all your £200.
I'd been watching the price for a few weeks, hoping it might dip under £150. I think it might be well worth the £165 tag though.

I don't think its ever been as low as £150...... don't forget quidco though, should help shave a little off the £165 price. ie 6% back at Best Buy for example.

£151 looks like the lowest according to camerapricebuster.
I've not looked at quidco before.
