Ok people my main interest is macro, but recently been roped into doing a wedding for a mate! I'm looking for a suitable Nikon prime lens for shooting groups of people indoors, all opinions welcome!
Advance thanks Sham

depends what body (full frame or crop)

In my bag 24mm 50mm, 85mm

IMHO using a prime indoors for group shots is backing yourself into a corner, and you are better off with a good all round zooms

Nikon 14-24mm f/2.8 AFS + Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 AFS for example

If doing indoor group shot, lens choice (especially for brightness) is secondary. It's more about getting sufficient DOF, lighting, and man management. No point in getting the front row sharp, and middle/back row all out of focus. Make sure you have the right combination of lighting, focal length and get it done quick before the party/guests start to moan/look grumpy.

To answer your question, I would agree, if you don't know what you want, then a prime is going to bite your ass. use a standard zoom. 17-55mm or 24-70mm as suggested should give you enough room to manoeuvre.

I'd add a flash to that equation. If you are looking at a prime for the speed of the lens then for group shots you will be disappointed as the DOF wide open is likely to be very narrow.

i agree something like a 17-55 is perfect together with a flash (if required).

Had a 17 55 f2.8 for almost a year, found the performance/price ratio poor worst £1000 I ever spent. With the increased noise performance of modern bodies wide apertures are not so vital, D7000 produces excellent images at ISO 3200 provided the exposure is correct in the first place.

i have a tokina 50-135 2.8 absolutly fantastic covers a huge variety of situations and i cant praise it high enough if 50mm is to close jus take 2 steps back then you have a 35mm or so also being a fast lens you dont need flash very often

cheers grahame
