Yes
Am starting to earn a little from motocross shots now, and am thinking about getting new lens.
The main reason is that I want an IS lens for my canon 350d
I currently use the sigma 70mm - 300mm but I very rarely go above say 100mm as the action is very close.

I don't want to spend the earth, any ideas?

(yes I've had a good look around but am a little lost lol)

simple: 24-105mm f4 L is - i use it most weekends for sports (we have two)

Hi Trev,
Never one to make things simple for you but I'll throw in a different option.
Have you considered swapping the 350D for something that gives you a better performance at higher ISO....there's a lot of 30D's floating around at very reasonable prices. I make this suggestion as I'm not sure that the IS is going to be wholly useful for the bulk of your motocross stuff.

now that canon bob (thank you) has suggested ditching the 350d i can suggest that if you could stretch to a 1d then a 135mm f2 L would work well - with the mk1 1d no higher then 800iso as max

the 1d would deal with the water/mud/dirt better then anything else in the canon line up and with the 1.3 crop the 135mm may not be toooooo long and it is very sharp...

Thanks for the advice guys.... I have a budget at the mo of about £200.... I dont think upgrading a camera is in my options right now.
The sigma apparently is know for soft focus issues so am really looking for better glass.
I fing the camera works well for me... but i just want a higher sharp photo ratio...

Does that narrow it down a little?

Cheers guys

You should be able to pick up a 135mm f2.8 for £150. It's an old design, no USM or FTM but it's my personal favourite at the mo (fwiw!). Or the 85mm f1.8 which does have USM and FTM for about £230.

Neither have IS but bigger apperatures will give you the faster shutter. Surely at these lengths it is the target that is moving causing you the problems rather than wobbly hands?

well pretty much all the primes will be fast and sharp. I'm not sure I understand why you want IS though? What F stop is your zoom?

Well at the risk of telling you the obvious, F2.8 will halve your shutter speed and F1.8 or 2 will halve that again, compared to the zoom at F4 light and ISO being equal. On the other hand DOF will be much shorter of course.

Trev,

A 350D and £200 is more than enough to get a 30D

Thanks guys..
so bob.. when I bought the 350.. u suggested a lens I should get... can you remember what that was? is upraging the cam going to help much when the lens has a soft focus issue?

When you say the pictures aren't consistently sharp - is this a lens quality issue, or just the camera/lens combo struggling to focus fully in time on a moving object ?

My 24-105 f4 L IS is superb, would work well on a crop sensor body as it can be prone to vignetting when fully open on full frame sensors. Fast focus too.

I think it may be the combo of the 2 as you say.
24-105 f4 L IS is about £500 though isn't it?

I use Siggy 24-70 f2.8 ,improved my hit rate 10 fold,i used to use Siggy 70-300 APO,man is it slow compared to the 24-70 ,not the best IMO ,especially now i'm using the 24-70 ,no comparison in my book :)
