Hi Guys!

I was wondering if you could help me. A local primary school has asked me to go in tomorrow for their world of work day and present photography as a job to them!

They want me to talk about the opportunities it has brought me etc, things it can do for you etc - and some activities for kids under the age of 12.

Can someone tell me some activities to do with them?

I've never spoke to kids before so im panicky on what to say - any advice on what things to say etc.

Hope someone can help!

Would help to know what sort of photography you do? Weddings, events, portrait, press, sports etc.

you show them your camera and lenses, let them have a shot. show them pictures, tell them what its like.

I did this for son's primary - at least kids know what a camera is I tried to explain to a class of 9-10 year olds what structural biology is

The kids will want to see your camera and the gear you use. They will not want to sit ad listen to you as they have an attention span of half the width of a cat's whisker.
The idea of getting them to take some shots of each other is good.

Why not talk and show your gear, ask them some questions about what you have shown them and the best two answers get to take a photo of each other using your camera.
You could then process it on your laptop and give it to them.

Just keep them from being bored...plenty of action...

Good luck..

Well you could always post this question on one of those boards which the police monitor, announce the name of the school, turn up with your camera and all your gear, and have the police arrest you... heaps of action...kids will never stop talking about you... you will have made your mark and get 10 out of 10 for the best most action filled presentation in the history of the school......:clap::clap:

1. get them involved.

Pick a volunteer and get them to take a photo (tethered is good as it then can be shown instantly). You can then get them and the class to say what they like or don't like about it, then get suggestions to make it better and get the person making that suggestion to do it better/different.

Things like shooting up from the floor makes the child look tall/big/important. Shooting down makes them look small. Zoom in for isolation. Zoom out for context. Get them to tell a story in the photo and make it better each time with each suggestion to improve. Get the ideas from them and do crazy stuff like lying on the floor or standing on the teachers desk :)

The learning objective is to get them to think about the story they are telling with the image and get them to engage their brains and think.

"What do you see in this picture?" "Where is he/she?" How does he feel?" "Why choose that place/angle to take the picture?"

I did something similar this year as part of my link govenor role and worked with a couple of groups talking about type of photography etc as my hobby, kids loved hands on with cameras I borrowed the wifes point and shoot my old one etc and they loved it shooting macro intrigued them as did some trick photography, simple stuff hand close to lens with person appearing stood on it, or held between thumb and finger, we also shot a long exposure in a dark room and had someone walk into and out of the shot to creat a semi-see through school ghost.

You will love it great fun working with kids.
