I'm drawing up a new pricing model that I can charge for freelance sports photography, mainly football. Don't bite my head off but I would like to see what others think and where there are any flaws. This is nowhere need definite and I have a few other things to tie up.

60 minute match £35 (+ expenses of 50p per mile)
90 minute match £50 (+ expenses)
£15 per hour thereafter.

This involves supplying the client with 20-25 photos on a CD or uploaded online post match.
Photos will then be sold via my website with commission available - in hindsight if I get loads of sales then the initial fee could be paid back minus my profit.
Individual head and shoulder shots available as an extra.

I have two prices..

35 quid and I put them on my website for sales.. I offer the customer half a dozen web size sample pics not inc any team pic

50 quid they get a dvd of all the pictures and i put them on my website for sale as well.

Fuel expenses from my postcode (listed) to theres to be added

So your not too far off my prices but I just charge for a match.. no 15 quid an hr aftre or anything..

You also have to make your terms clear.. that they cant expect me to get every player (but rare i dont), they cant expect me to ge every goal.. i also give a minimum print size for all pics of 7x5 .. i wont guarantee any bigger in case its a dark dank day and the actions at other end of pitch so there all big crops...

I'd echo what Tony says in that £50 for a full game sounds about spot on. Make it a match fee and drop the idea of paying it back if sales go above that figure. It's hard enough to make dosh as it is, without offering the customer massive slice of your sales!

Out of interest Tony, how do you price cricket if you don't mind me asking?

Are they low res with watermark? low res with no watermark?

full size no watermark.. whats the point of a watermark.... if the customer is hiring me to shoot a match and supply pictures then thats what they get.

Never done that.. All the cricket I do is for the local papers who pay there standard shift rates.. I just stick em on my site to get extra revenue if possible.. but cricket isnt a big seller like football :)

The football is also mostly papers and extra revenue from sales and they do sell well.. If not papers then...Some like cup finals I will do for free because I know for definite i will get sales ... otherwise if anyone wants me to go to a game (not papers) then its the prices listed ..

Gerrit? :)

I gorrit!

The paper that I was covering football for isn't doing cricket this year (the league has collapsed) so I'm looking at other avenues like the clubs themselves.

Football is the biggest money earner.. on a sliding scale I would say cricket is down there at the bottom ..

Its summer now.. you should be looking for tournaments.. any kids tournemant should make money (how bad does that read) if you advertise yoruself well.. onsite or offsite sales..

Thanks Kipax for your input. The problem I feel is making myself attractive to the market I want to target (kids, amateur) and not underpricing myself when anything comes in that I know I could charge more for - this is obviously the problem with many businesses pricing strategy. At least though I have a basis to work with.

Guys,

I know that this is going to sound somewhat rude, and it's genuinely not meant to, but I'm trying to get my head around the business model after reading this thread.

If you're charging a client £50 for a match that lasts 90mins, allow for half time, being there a bit early, say 15 mins each way for travelling, allow for half an hour to copy files onto computer, sift out the duffers and burn, package and send to client.

That's over 3 hours at best, probably nearer 4. At £50 that's £17 per hour best case. That's a very poor rate for someone who's self employed.

Or, am I missing some upsales, or do you cover several matches a day ?

Don't bite my head off.. it's a genuine question.

Did you miss the bit about web sales?

Your actually missing a great deal :) But the answer is far too big... hmm how to put simply.. I earn anything between 200 and 400 quid for sport on a saturday and sunday afternoon..... It would be nice to earn that every day but you can't. Work out that rate and its a lot per hr.. But not enough to live on..

This leaves me the rest of the week (and sat/sun morn/eve) to find enough work to amke up a living wage.. i do that by offering a price i know from experience will work.. yes its low.. but weekend is high.. add them both together and i ahve a wage.. its not a great wage and for less hrs i could probably make more on a supermarket checkout

I am a sports photogrpaher and finding work midweek esp daytime is hard but doable .

All I can say is ..Dont fixate on how much per hr for one aspect of my living.. It's swings and roundabouts.. One way or another I make a wage every week and thats the important thing..

No I fully appreciate that.. some jobs are 'killers' and some are 'fillers'. Add them all together and we (hopefully) earn a decent living.

I presumed (there was nowt in the original posting to say otherwise) that the rates being quoted applied to all matches, and as most matches happen at the weekend... That's the bit I was missing or that didn't add up for me.

Thanks for the clarification and apologies if I offended anyone through the bits that I missed !

Its not all football either BTW :) but the term "match" could be associated with anyhting.. i do take on other commisions now and then.. I like to do music events.. always do the local blues festivals for the local papers :) but no weddings and try to stay away from news stories.

and i cant see anything in your Q that would offend anyone? :)

I think Jerm has ironed out a few concerns that I had - mainly towards a 90 minute match for £50 doesn't equate for 90 minutes work. However, I do freelance as a part-time pocket money job. I'm self employed in another business area that hopefully in time will provide my 'living wage'. At my age, 23, I have very little responsibilities as such that I need to worry about. But a couple of games each week, over a season, will go along way to helping me in the future. Added to the fact I'm earning from something I love.
