First of all i'm new to this forum, Hi guys i look forward to posting on here

Recently I decided to take the plunge and shoot sports professionally and am in the process of applying for licences for appropriate leagues, however pricing is totally new to me as is contacting picture desks and i was wondering if any of you had any advice.

cheers Dan

Hi Dan, asking pros what they charge can be a bit hit and miss as it can then give you the opportunity to undercut them, it happens.

Hi Gary the question isn't so much as what pros charge as to what news outlets offer for say 1/8,1/4, 1/2 and Full pages along with the pricing differences between regional and national papers. sorry I hadn't been clearer
Its much the same thing Dan, all papers will pay the least they can get away with, the info youre requesting is still asking what the guys get paid regardless of whether its what the tog requested or what the paper offered, togs get paid differently, there is no industry standard as such, the closest you will come to a "standard" pricing structure is if youre working for one of the agencies.

Best policy!!!!!!!!!! ask the papers and news desks direct, you either accept or dont accept what they offer you.

Most of the pro's on here have spent years building up contacts with various publications and newspapers and so will have their own negotiated rates which I very much doubt would be prepared to reveal. They did it the hard way and succeeded were as many have failed or just given up through frustration. Some have contracts with agencies and will be paid according to that contract or just work on spec. You havnt stated what sports you'll be covering but just remember you'll be starting from the bottom and having to deal with editors who "have no budget" or will pay very little which may not even cover your fuel costs. Its a long hard road your looking to start on so you'll need strong determination and probably a little bit of good luck to succeed.

Cheers for the answers guys :) , its a shame theirs no base rate and is a case of get what your given

On another Note in the BBL contact it states images cannot be used for sale to the public, im assuming sale to stock agencies is permitted even though this indirectly provides access to public. anyone know if this is permitted or not ?

No sales to public, no exceptions

Sports Photographers are well known for protecting their contacts/prices and lack of hair ;-)
Guess that means insecurity that someone cheaper/better will come and take their clients....

But as for pricing - personally I don't have any standard rate per image, per game, per day, per tournament.
Sometimes the pictures go for as little as £40 (which is VERY poor!!) - sometimes I get £900 for one (OK - that wasn't for newspaper print, but still).
Then again, sometimes I've done a whole game for a client for £50 ...
So it really depends ... the 'correct' price is what YOU are happy to sell your images with.
But - be prepared for more seasoned photographers telling you that you are selling yours too cheap (also know that they probably get paid the same themselves ;-) ).

My deals with my clients often are for a game, and they receive a certain minimum amount of images - with or without archive rights (price of course depending).

As for BBL images - as the agreement states 'Not For Sale For Public' (only exceptions to these tend to be Club photographers - who have permission to sell to public).

aint that the truth ...another good reason not to tell anyone your prices...

but to be honest... most of the time the prices are predicted to you not you to them.. esp true for media
