Price rises - Anyone else put off buying

If the rumours of a 5D Mk3 are true, might be worth holding off for a bit...

I'm having the opposite problem, I've seen some large price hikes on some lenses (Sigma 50-500 Pentax Fit £639 - £900+) and I'm looking to pickup some lenses in the next couple of months.
But I'm wondering whether to just buy them right now before any further rises occur.

Got in just in time (bought in mid March....). That's my camera outlay sorted for a while now....

Yeah I'm seeing the same. Also seems to be a lack of higher end bodies for sale on here.

Sold my 1DmkIV in March trying to replace with a 7D and/or 5DmkII. I was trying to get both used but I haven't seen one for sale lately. Looks like I sold at the wrong time. :bonk:
Plus my Canon pro camcorder I ordered three weeks ago is delayed in delivery until at least early May.

I'm in the hunt for a 100mmL IS Macro, prices have gone up, but I didn't have the money before, but I'd rather have the lens at £X more than miss a shot because I didn't have the lens...

You tried kerso? I bought one of these mid last month and he had stock in at the time (at a price lower than some second hand ones have gone on e-bay!!)....

Cracking lens BTW...

It's the low pound that's doing it, it's really weak at the moment. In fact I don't think I've ever seen it weaker. The problem is that with each new batch of stock that gets imported the price rises due to the dropping pound.

When I do the market rate conversions between the pound and the swiss franc the actual price of the kit is about equal, but in the last 2 years the actual ticket prices in the shops here have dropped by about 30% as the franc is stupidly strong at the moment. This means I'm in an buying phase as this situation won't last forever.

Swings and roundabouts really.

been toying with some lenses about £2k's worth and they jumped up at the backend of last week, need to stop reading reviews and just buy ha ha

I emailed him just before I posted that.

Really? In fact the Pound is stronger than it has been for a long while against both the Dollar and Yen.

Currently 1£ will buy you $1.63 which is its highest for some time - LINK

Or, if you prefer Yen. 1£ is 137 Yen - also it's highest for ages. - LINK

If the rumours of a 5D Mk3 are true, might be worth holding off for a bit...

Even if the rumour turns out to be true,I wouldn't hold my breath for it being released too soon.
Because it's difficult enough at the moment to find the current lens line-up in stock anywhere, let alone anything new in the pipeline.

Could it be anything to do with the VAT?? If so it will prob stay the same until they up it again :(

Recent price rises are to do with "that" earthquake affecting supply - not helped by a lot of panic buying by photographers as a result - more than tax/exchange rates/etc...

I was waiting for the D800/D4 later in the year anyway, so these short-term fluctations doesn't bother me...it hasn't put me off, just frustrated me slightly because any launch will be later and of even shorter supply than it would have been before. Once production ramps back up again, the current panic-buying at premium prices of lenses will work in my favour, as there will be less people chasing the good lenses...

Oh yeah I forgot abou Japan :( That will deffinatly have a huge impact on things... I was suprised they launched the D5100 when they did.

well i cant see i would make a loss and its got 3 years warrenty:D.

Wow 3 years is great... how did you manage that?

You do know that the warrenty is only relevant to the person who bought it and u can't transfer it when you sell it?1 ;)

When I bought my first D700 in about 2009, I had to sell it as we bought this house. I paid, £1450 for it brand spanking new and sold it for £1600 about 6 months later as the prices had rocketed.

Nikon body warranties arent transferable. Nikon had a special offer on the pro bodies for a free extended waranty a while back.

Aside from the reasoning, I'm one of those who's salary isn't keeping pace with the price hikes in everything you NEED rather than want, hence reduced disposable income.
Therefore, I stick with what I have, ****es me off but there you go.

the d700 price has shot up £100 which is great.(well for me)paid £1490 brand new.

I got mine from Amazon last Sept - in a week it shot up by a few quid then a day after dropped less than what I paid for it - seems now that its more than what I paid for it... £100 more :D .... Just glad I got one when I did

I should stop price watching on items that I have brought as it does get me when they go cheaper - but then it does make me happy when they shoot up as well (just like the D700 has)

I know how you feel... bad times :( But as I have read a few times, its more about the person behind the camera sometimes :D

(not aimed at anyone, just a general point)

Funny how nobody complained when house prices tripled in 5 years, but food & petrol go up 30% and suddenly everyone has a crisis...:bang:

According to people I have spoken to in the trade - two major issues are affecting...

The major manufacturers buy into europe in Euros which directly affects the UK price - as well as the Yen.... and yes of course Japanese manufactured product is in short supply:thumbsdown:

 I think it may be because anyone trying to get on the propery ladder gave up along time ago

House prices tripled in 5 years when? They certainly never have round here!

....... aside from the fact that you can't make money on a house unless you're downsizing or moving to a cardboard box under Waterloo bridge.
You do, however, need to pay your phone bill, gas bill, electricity bill, food bill, council tax etc etc.

I guess I have bought my lenses at the right time because it seems that second hand camera and lenses are going up in price. I have just sold few lenses bought about 3 years ago (still in excellent condition) with a loss of only £100

you're missing the point...its not about the money you could make when downsizeing, its the money you lose when you move house when prices rise dramatically (even ignoring interest rates) to pay the increased difference.

p.s.
My first house cost £35k brand new when interest rates were 14%...and that was just 20 years ago and I could afford that as a student - a quite laughable idea now....

Seen a 7D a few months back on amazon for around £1100, now It's around £1300, I should try get a hold of one soon.

Longer term, in the last 3 years prices have increased overall about 50 to 75 percent.

Absolutely no idea how or why, but thats definitely the case.

I just postred something along these lines, you can't buy a D700 in Australia if you want to, most pro bodies and lenses, both nikon and canon have sold out and the estimates for new stock are anywhere from months to next year.

I was going to buy an extra D700 before the earthquake in Japan but was holding off for the D800/D4 looks like I may be waiting a while.
