At this time of writing, the price of SanDisk Extreme III 4GB cards on Amazon are a whopping £50.40!!!

That's nearly three times what they were in November last year. My last purchase of these was in early May and they were only £17.99 then. It's the first time I've known these things to sky rocket in price. The prices seem to be very volatile at the moment. Yesterday morning they were £32, falling back to £24 and early this morning, they were £39 and rising.

Anyone with any thoughts on this?

Cheers all

Well for £43 quid from amazon you can buy yourself a UDMA 60MB/S 8gb sandisk extreme....

Ultra II, Extreme III and Extreme IV have been phased out. New line up is Ultra (same performance of Extreme III), Extreme and Extreme Pro. There may be different warranties for different cards, but in performance terms a new Ultra should be the same 30Mb/S as the late Extreme IIIs.

4Gb cards are being phased out as well in favour of bigger sizes - 8Gb +

MyMemory will sell you a 4Gb Extreme III for £ 30 or the current Ultra (which is same performance) for £ 16.99

+1 to this, just bought an Ultra from Amazon and did a speed test with my Extreme III's and its identical in performance - both writing from camera to card and reading from card to PC.

I think it is a combination of the newer Sandisk Extreme cards are replacing the Extreme III, and the newer cards being only available from 8Gb upwards. You can get a 8Gb Extreme for cheaper than a 4Gb Extreme III.

Stocks of Extreme IIIs must be running down too. ;)

Just to confirm what others have said, the new Ultra 30MB/s are a replacement for the old Extreme III 30MB/s. I have some of both and they perform identically.

The price of the old Extreme III seems to be rocketing as the supply dries up.

ooh, I'm glad I stumbled across this thread. I was panicking over the apparent massive price increase yesterday and ended up ordering some Lexar cards instead. But I've just ordered 2 4gb Sandisk Ultra cards too.

Thanks for taking the time to inform us of the new line-up Andrew, Jeremy, Chris and Carl

I've tended to stay with the 4GB size in case anything went wrong and I lose the data even if on a 5D2, 4Gb doesn't exactly go very far.

Think I'd be seriously tempted to start using at least 8gb cards if I had a 5dII the raw file size is just to massive!

Soooooooo much cheaper in the states, as I have just returned and needed to get another suitcase to bring everything home.
