Hi all can some one please explain to me why there is such a big price difference on a D200 here in the UK compared to the US. A neighbour of mine was in the states for x-mas and came back with a shiny new D200 which he got for $639 now I know he wont have a uk warranty etc but at that price it must be worth looking in to.

You will find everything is substantially cheaper in the US, it's called rip off Britain. We on the forum recommend amongst others Ian Kerr (Kerso) who you will find referred to in lots of threads. For instance, I am buying a 1Ds mk 3 for £4000 in the US as against £5999 in the uk. However if you import yourself, vat is due. If you buy from Ian, then he takes care of everything.

Sorry, I should point out that is not Ian's price, it is the advertised US list!!

Honestly? Because we'll pay it - the higher price of the item, and we accept the higher tax on top.

Everything is made in the same factory, with the same costs - any differences in price are just trying to take advantage that a market is perceived to accept a higher price. If we don't, the price will come down.

Just had a quick look at the link and the D200 is now showing at $549 (£275)

The cheapest price I know of over here for the body is £750 from Jessops. That's £475 cheaper which is equivalent to getting an 18-200VR for nowt.

Daft :cuckoo:

Yep, that's the way suck-off Britain is! I get all of my cam equipment from the States (except flash units, etc.)...best way to do it is go to NYC for a trip and they have by far the BEST camera deals (especially if you go into a shop and can bargain with them). I got my Canon XT a few years ago back in the States for about half what it was in the UK and brought it back myself...that was that!

Don't forget the pound is very advantageous against the dollar at the moment. Also UK taxes are much higher. But having said that the price does seem very low.

I did a search for a D300. B&H, a very reputable NY dealer, is selling them , body only for $1,799. UK price from A J Purdy £1,199. Not a large price difference when you convert bearing in mind the high pound.

I wonder if these cameras are at clearance prices, or maybe just a hook?

Must get in contact with him to get a price for a D200 currently using a D70 but wouldn’t mind a upgrade

Stuff is always cheaper in the US, but the internet is also overun with scammers, the type that say one thing over the phone when you order and then do what the hell they want once they have your credit card number.

Was just about to post the same message ... :D

Thought that I had heard their name before somewhere.

Classic "Bait and switch" company

Which is why a lot of us use Kerso.

Does Kerso do the Sigma Macro 105mm lens I want? I couldn't see it the other day on his ebay site.

Send him an email, although he may be on hols just now. He does do Sigma lenses, my niece bought a 10-20mm.

What's Kerso's email address? Is his name Ian?

Wow! a six month rating of 0.19 out of 10

I'm surprised they're still trading with their reputation on the floor.

But if you look at the link in this post would you want to risk it, I'd rather pay a bit more and feel safe, you can still buy from the US but their prices are over low!

I know!

I got the latest version of Microsoft Office as a digital download from the US. Worked fine until you have a problem with your pc and need to reinstall it. Then the serial number won't work with it. You ring them up and they give you a new number. Trouble is you have to register it with Microsoft UK and they won't recognise it!

yes he does, Email him, got mine from hom just before xmas

I bought my Nikon D200 from Hong Kong 4 months ago with a D40x inc kit lens, sb600, sb800, 2 bags, a nifty 50, Nikon AF-S 105 macro and a Nikon VR18-200 VR2....

Total cost at Jessops about £4500, cost in Hong Kong £2650. Paid the import duty etc and it was still less then £3000 in total. I would do it again. Nikon's warranty is worldwide so I don't care.
