Popped into my local independent photographic retailer this morning in town. They have always been slightly more expensive (maybe 10% more expensive) than online but offer excellent service and really know their stuff, so we will happily use them instead of internet.

Just 6 weeks ago I bought a Sigma 10-20mm Canon fit from them for £310, they had it priced at £330 but we haggled a little and got the price down. Walked in today, and was very very shocked to see it priced in the window at £450!!!

Have prices really increased that much? Hard to believe just a number of weeks ago it was £120 less...

Yes they have. Much to do with a weak Sterling.

Canon gear has increased so much it would make your toes curl. The sign of times to come thinks me, so buy your equipment now.

I bought my 100-400mm lens just after x*** from Jessops for £965, CameraPriceBuster now shows that Jessops are doing them for £1399.

I know how you feel. I bought a 580EX II from Jacobs before christmas for £280 - now advertised at £450!!!

Going to hold off buying anything at the moment, especially new!

Yes prices have increased a lot due to our weak currency. Pretty much all the imaging companies had increases in January and Canon had another price increase on March 1st with Nikon following suit on April 1st. There will be a lot of disparity between places as there will be old and new stock so its possible you got one at the old price and now the new stock is in it reflects the new dealer price.

The Sigma 10-20 is still £330 at Warehouse Express so it seems your local shop is taking the mikey...

Not necessarily....WHE may still have stock at the old price however when it sells out then the revised price will appear. You only have to look at the 30mm and 50mm Sigma's to see that has happened over the past couple of weeks.

I think its fair to say the economy in Japan is fragged. Their not talking recession, their talking about a depression over there.

Think I'll be content with what I've got for the time being.

RRP of the 10-20 is now £550, so those that don't have any old stock will likely be pretty darn expensive now.

I think it's fair to say the price increases are starting to hit home for most people, the actual RRP increases over the past few months for many things are significant to say the least (30-40% easily) so now everything is gradually starting to settle down it's becoming clearer. I imagine the second-hand market will catch up pretty soon...for example when the £330 10-20s run out brand new I can't see people still selling them for £280 or thereabouts second-hand.

Is there a big rock somewhere that people are hiding under?

Sounds cozy, can I join in?!

They have been numerous threads on this, can't believe this is still surprising folks as the prices all started going up start of this year.

Can't see that the importers will be able to stand the drop in sales and manufacturers the drop in exports for long - they'll have to re jig their pricing or some (both importers and the Japanese manufacturers) will simply go out of business.

This has been done to death yet people still spout this stuff :bang:

WE have still got stock from the old price so will continue to sell it at that. Once that stock has gone its time for a price increase:bang:.

Just watch camerapricebuster you can see companies going from the cheapest to the most expensive as they sell out. Then 2nd becomes cheapest until they sell out and then they have to increase price and become the most expensive.

In a few months WE will be back to being cheapest as everyone has sold all of their old stock.

Exactly my thoughts.

Taking bets on how many more threads will pop up!

perhaps because its a concern along with other knock on effects to people.

it feels to me like the WORLD is collapsing

we had the war to end all wars now look at the situation we have its worse

the place is unstable enough without this adding to it

Old stock/new stock. Case in point the Canon EOS 1D MkIII At Jacobs the price is£2,399.00 and the Jessops price is £3,199.00!

I think Jacobs are having a 7 day sale, hense the low price

Is buying abroad an option - have colleagues visting the US often...

Sorry, didn't realise there was a rule where any topic could only be covered ONCE on the forum.

"People" CAN use the search function, in fact I do for most equipment reviews, however I didn't know that current affairs in the photography world also had to be searched for. I will have a look on the first couple pages of a forum to see if there is a RECENT thread, and if there's not, I will post. If we all used the search function this would become a very stagnent forum, you wouldn't like that though would you?

Jesus, if you don't like the title, don't even read it, and most certainly don't post. Simple as. Lighten up.

Cheers to everyone else though, nice to see some people will not jump down someone's throat for posting something twice...

Its a bit more than twice. Quick search for 'price rise' threw up the following threads withint 2 pages of results

lol get an admin to delete those old threads you have posted then as this is the active thread.

people are posting in the thread so it must be of use and valid.

as the twizzel said, if the thread doesn't interest you then don't read it or post in it.

Quite a few lenses i've been looking at have gone above my budget, i'll make do with what i have now till it all comes down again which hopefully won't be too long away.

Jeez man, chill out. Your point has been made, this happens all the time and really, does it matter that much that you search for similar threads and post links just to prove your point?

If you are unhappy with the thread don't read it or ask the mods to delete it. Relax a bit man, there are more worrying issues in the world just now than oversubscribed thread topics.

I think the (real) issue here is one of efficiency. E.g. it is more efficient and in the members' best interests to have information on the same subject in the same place. It also keeps the forum tidy. The fact the problem is prevalent doesn't prevent addressing it.

It's probably worth pointing out that Rick is not the only person who has pointed this out.
