Yes
This particular 'Home PC' is long in the tooth.

Laptops, phones, ipads etc seem to have taken over in our house so the old Dell family PC gets neglected.

Anyway, fired up.....It (as ever) was hanging

God knows what half this stuff is but is this bad ?

If you mean the number of processes running- nah it's fine. Mine's got about 79 processes running and it's a newish machine doing not very much.

CPU usage is it doing some form of virus scan (msmpeng.exe). I'd want to check what starts up and whether it is necessary on a machine with 2G of memory....

Cheers, I'll be having a stab at working out what's what later on today.

It might be easier if you use Process Explorer instead of Task Manager because it gives more information for each process - e.g. the name of the company (as well as the description).

One of its most useful features is 'Search Online'. If you highlight a process in the interface and right-click, it'll open a Google search of the process name (via a dialog box) - much easier than using Task Manager.

Thanks Ozei - that looks handy.

My MacBook Pro is running 213 processes at the moment. 25 of them are separate processes for each of the tabs I have open in Safari and Chrome :D

MsMpEng.exe is using a fair bit on mine too (Win7 64bit). Here it is in Process Explorer:

Sorry about quality of above screengrab - the decent one is too wide for the forum size limit.
