Presenting images as sets or alone?

Hey folks, me again (sorry :P )

So, as per the title, this is something I struggle to get my head around. When I shoot, for example, portraits, I end up with a few files to hand over to the subject. Now, I have always been following the process that it's better to present the single best photo from the set to the world, as the rest can dilute that one best one. But sometimes, perhaps I should post a few from a set? But I hate when it attracts comments such as, "number 3 for me" or whatever.

I am properly on the fence about this. I am wanting to start either a site or blog site up to show my personal projects like portraits and other photos i may take on my travels, away from my wedding site so as to keep them separate. But I cannot decide whether I should post images as singles or sets. I know everyone does it differently and I need to find what works best for me, but that's why I welcome opinions, as someone may suggest something that perhaps I haven't thought of.

Why a rigid policy either way Gareth? Couldn't you have a set when a set works (images of similar merit but showing a story, or different aspects of a subject) and a single frame when appropriate (if from a set, the one that stands out).

To be honest, if it's just portraits I think one site is fine. If you're going for corporate stuff or another genre of photography altogether, then you need split sites.

It's for anything personal I do Phil. So portraits that aren't couples. Shots on MF Film. Photos from travels. Things like that. I am unsure to have a section for 'personal projects' on the wedding site or set something up completely different. That's the internal dilemma of today. :lol: Or just something like a tumblr Blog
 
I blog them, and sometimes I do a job I don't even blog but I share on FB. But generally I don't share enough stuff. I also have a gallery on the site for 'other portraits' which contains some random stuff.

But I have come up with a concept for a personal project, which I just need to kick my own arse to get off the ground. I will blog those images as that's the point of the project, to stretch myself and widen my repertoire.

Great stuff. Thanks Phil. Perhaps I could have a header saying 'Personal Projects', then an index under that header with different shoots. Text to explain the idea etc at the top. Perhaps. It's just an idea but what I don;t want it to do on the wedding site, is make me less credible as a wedding photographer.

At the moment, with only a few weddings and the potential of lots of 'other' projects, it might skew your image. But once you're busier with weddings, slipping in the odd personal project just looks like you stretching yourself, which customers will appreciate.

I wouldn't see a problem with a good wedding photographer posting anything at all as 'personal projects' as long as it's done properly - some sites look like a dogs dinner because they appear to be trying to appeal to all sectors and many non-existent markets.

That's what I don't want to detract from and why I am thinking about it so hard! Ha. But then, if my personal projects were on a separate site, for anything and everything, if the portraits I produce ever have a commercial value to attract potential customers for that, do I want that mixed with loads of other stuff. And I wanted my personal stuff to have a quirky name or url. Due to recent posts, idiotwithcamera sounds appropriate. But it doesn't suggest professional. but then, that's why it would be a separate site. :bang:
