Starting to dip my toe into video can anyone recommend training material / sources for a complete begineer

Lynda.com have loads of stuff - I've found it brilliant for After FX training
 
Adobe Classroom in a book is very good if you don't know where to start, other than that there are plenty of free tutorials on youtube and other websites, just google what you are stuck on.
 
I'll second Lynda if you have the time and inclination for that type of learning. If you're starting from a blank slate it'll be pretty good
 
Third for Lynda.com - taught me everything on FCPX within three days. Resist the temptation to go through to later parts of the video courses and do it one step at a time and it gives a rock solid basis on whichever software / platform you're trying to learn.
