pregnancy question: gestational diabetes

No, I understand it leads to a bigger baby though, but I think can be controlled? I remember being tested for it at each antenatal visit. Sorry not much help!

I've had type 1 diabetes for 15 years and don't know too much about GD but there's a really good diabetes forum I used to frequent which has lots of info on GD and really helpful forum members (including lots of parents) here:

Hope this helps!

George.

My partner is 38 weeks pregnant and has gestational diabetes, she controls her sugar level via diet, and has to test her blood 3 times a day.
As has been said the baby can be born bigger than normal.
The hospital will likely do a couple more scans than normal to check babies size.

Just had my mates wife diagnosed with this, much the same as everyone elses experience with the added bonus of a wheat allergy that makes her puke green

thanks guys
and thanks to everyone that sent me a PM.

My wife is just waiting to have a second test to confirm it. Fingers crossed she doesnt have it.

essexguy - How big was the baby in the last scan she had? Was it more than 95th percentile?

I haven't got the paper work with me but the babies estimated wait was 6lb 7oz at 36wk scan.
This is our forth child and the only one where gestational diabetes has been diagnosed, we have been told it will be bigger than the others. so expect 8lb+ as our daughter who was the heaviest of the 3 went 7lb 12oz.
She has her c-section booked for next Tuesday so will let you know the weight.

thanks for that... send her my best wishes for a relatively easy birth :)

my missus is mostly worried about the baby being born with possible breathing or heart problems. Did your doctor advise anything about that?

Was told that there was a chance but it was rare, they seemed more worried about babies size. After the birth they said the baby will have to have a blood test to check her sugar/glucose levels and may need to go to special care if levels are wildly out.

she had her bump measured last Friday and it is the same size as one of a women at 40wks.

cool. thats what was worrying my missus the most. She'll be relieved to hear that.

she had the bump measured yesterday and its 7 weeks bigger than it should be, but the midwife says those measurements can often be a long way out depending on how the baby is lying (laying?)

thanks for the info. it helps a lot

I recommend that forum too :)

At least GD goes away after the baby is born, I wish that was the case with type 1.
Hopefully all should be fine, best wishes!

my missus had gestational diabetes during pregnancy and at the time of birth it did lead to a few complications as she also started with high blood pressure close to the time of the birth. This all meant she had to have an emergency c-section and had too spend about a week in intensive care but both are doing fine now (was born 5th march this year).

And she just told me when she was measured she was 6 weeks bigger than she was expected to be but baby was 7lb 10 when born at 37 weeks.

Was your wife in intensive care or the baby? Does the baby have any lasting problems?

missus had to stop on high dependancy for about 3 days and the baby was in intensive care for a week. but they are both fine now and she has been fine on all the checks she has had (none special just the usual ones babies have).

I hate it when they do that, it's the most ridiculous way of measuring, they just use a tape measure on your bump! So imprecise. Pleas tell your wife not to worry about that, only a scan can confirm.

Hope everything goes well - it is such a worrying time (I'd like to say it gets better once they are born, but the worry is there forever now I'm afraid, just changes form!)

once again guys, thanks for all your help

good news today: she had the second test and she doesnt have GD!!!! I'm soo happy!!

would be great to hear how the rest of you get on, though.. fingers crossed!

Measuring the symphisis - fundal height (when they measure the bump from top-bottom with the tape measure) is usually a fairly good way of predicting a larger baby, although it is not good at predicting smaller babies. It can be inaccurate if the mum is obese though. A late scan in pregnancy is actually not that fantastic at predicting weight as it can be 1lb out either way.

I am glad everything's OK Gary.

My OH went in this morning and had her c-section at 9.30am she had a baby girl weighing 8lb 2oz she was 39+1 day.

The baby has had to have 6 hourly blood tests to check sugar level, all has been ok so far. My OH sugar has been ok as well.

What a beautiful little girl

I was borderline with my first son, they think it was more because he was big than me having a prob but i had to be treated like it, i got LOADS of scans and they wouldnt let you go over 38weeks. He came a few days early but it ended in an emergency c-section because he was big, he was 9lbs 5oz.

With my second i didnt have it but they treated me like i did again so lots of hospital visits/ scans ect and not to go over 38 weeks again. I had a c-section again due to him not coming before and he was born at 8lbs 3oz.

For me it wasnt a big deal, just had to watch diet and do my bloods.

Glad to hear your wife doesnt have it but those extra scans are nice, i even got a freebie 3D scan and pic while i was at one

Hope the rest of the pg is good :)

OK, well at a non-pregnant 9st I don't think I'm obese, and they got mine really wrong, and didn't spot my baby was breech until I went for a scan for placenta pravia. Obv this doesn't happen to everyone, but just wanted to say it's not the most precise method at all.
