Is there any way of predicting when there will be good sunrises and sunsets? I assume they depend on atmospheric conditions and the weather so they can be predicted resonably well, or at least predicted to be more likely to occur.

Could anyone give any pointers?

Thanks

:)

Look for mornings and nights when the pollution index is high. LOL. Really. You should see the gorgeous sunsets in L.A. ;)

I look for reasonably clear skies with some cloud and a forecast of sunny weather the following day. Based on the old saying 'Red sky at night, shepherd's delight' I have a reasonal expectation of a dramatic sunset.

weather fronts approaching/departing from the east or west are normaly a good start. Especially if you've had a good spell of sunshine. Generaly though, as long as there isn't a band of low cloud across the horizon you should be ok. Any clouds will catch the sun as it sinks or rises. High contrasts of cold and warm during day and night will give you mist/dew/condensation as will high humidity during the day.

All probably best when there's high clouds, cirrus or altostratus are normaly good, puffy and high enough to catch the light of the setting sun.

Best thing is to be every evening for a while so you get a good feel for them. Not practical and I don't really do it, but I do spend an awfullot of time outside though!

So a few clouds and dust/moisture in the air is the best chance of good ones. :)

I would love to spend lots of evenings and mornings around nice spots, the only problem is the nice spots are miles from where I live and my only transport is a bicycle.

My aim is to go to these spots when I think a good sunset and sunrise is likely and camp overnight there so catching both (hopefully), also saving me having to cycle for an hour or so in the darkness to get back home.
