Yes
Over the past few days ive had quite a few emails from amazon & ebuyer & few more shops that i use saying Windows 8 UPDATE can now be Pre-ordered for 49 quid.

Is it worth it.???
im still unsure if to order it or not.?

Ive been using the beta version on my spare PC thats connected to my TV once a week or so for a hr just to see if i like it or not & im still unsure if i do.

Thing is now windows 8 is coming out win 7 will be out of date within 12 months so is it best to grab the offer whilst its cheap or wait 12 months & pay full price for windows 8 when they bring out SP1 for it...????

whats your views on Windows 8, will you be upgrading to it or not..??????

cheerz.
BaRoN.

Is it not based around touch screen technology and reckoned to be a tad cumbersome with a mouse.
Don't fancy greasy fingerprints on my screen and I think it would give me arm fatigue issues, too.

Agree with this.

If you have a touch screen, you can get it.

Win 7 will still be in use for quiet some time. At work we still use winxp and have just started testing Win7.

you can use it with touch screen if you have one but it works just as good with just the mouse..

this surely must be the case considering the amount of touchscreen users compared to mouse/keyboarders. It would be sheer lunacy to release the next generation of your OS and aim it at the minority.

There's a thread in computers section somewhere with people's views on the preview release.

As said the metro style can be turned off, it's pretty much like windows 7 underneath visually.

Upgrade to a mac.

I wouldn't really call it updating actually, like coming from the middle ages. Pieces of *****.

I have no need to get windows 8, windows 7 appears to be working just fine for me.

why post that, just why???

thanks guys for your views on this, i also posted the same question on another forum & got the same sort of reaction from them, its looking like no one at all is in a rush to move over to windows 8 just yet & to be honest i think i will be sticking with win 7 for now

cheers

We've moved all office computers but 1 to Windows 8. Works well, but at the moment 99% of the time you are using old windows apps and not the new metro ones.

There are a lot of knee jerk reactions around, but IMO works really well, what people object to doesn't come up in every day use, I also use keyboard shortcuts and have done for a while, the same ideas still work in Wndows 8.

I'm pretty sure you can upgrade for £25 direct from Microsoft from Xperia or later.

OK, but what are the compelling, 'must have', benefits of upgrading?

It's very, very fast.....and the hot corners actually work really well once you get used to them. It's quite nice to be able to snap a metro app to the side of the desktop.

I know this doesnt particularly sit on this exact topic, but I think some people considering trying windows 8 should first try a linux varient, such as ubuntu, all my client pcs that i can get away with are, and the people i have converted so far wont to back to windows lol.

I do still use windows but dont find it as good, and port my apps across if there isnt a decent alternative, thats running win7, and i wont be upgrading that one to v8 until i have to

My boot time on my laptop is down to 12 seconds and I don't have an SSD.

I like the live tiles, currently as the app store is still quite bare there are not many compelling apps that will attract you to the new Windows 8 UI. Multiple monitors work better and Hyper-V is very nice.

As for Linux and Mac - doesn't work in a business enviroment and won't for a number of years as so many programs are written for Windows and are tied to Microsoft technologies. It will take companies a long time to upgrade to cross platform technologies. Even then the security, tracking and locking down features in Windows are very hard to beat.

From a home user point of view, why complicate your life with Linux or Mac, Why not use something even simpler?? When it comes to photoshop etc. a tablet won't handle it, but these OS are moving to the desktop and then what do you need? The arguements against WIndows are going to disappear as the same arguments can't be used due to the major changes in Windows 8.

The oddest thing in Windows 8 is the disjointed UI, General basic settings you do in the PC Settings under the UI, screen resolution and more complicated bits you have to do in the original Windows environment.

Just for record, we have 50 odd client machines in a sme manufacturing environment, over 90% run linux, some granted cant, but we know and work with many companies also using open source technologies.

I do agree the problem is people are tied to windows, i doubt this will really change, but i can also say that i 100% rate and value out clients/servers and overall whole network on linux over windows.

But this said, im not a linux snob, and my home machine is windows because there is no linux dist that is suitable running the programs i use (lightroom etc), ive ported them across to ubuntu but not happy using them like that.

A few years ago it seemed like linux would take over and people would begin changing from windows but i just cant see it happening for s long long time, swings and roundabouts really lol

Ive just been playing with it
i will not be buying it ,fine for a tablet ,silly idea for a desktop/laptop
its neither one thing or another having both metro and windows ui
i am someone who loves new windows versions but ill skip this i think its a ms balls up

I thought about this but Win 8 is just about win 7 with a new front end, don't think I'll bother.

Sorry but that is rubbish.

I just bought Win 8, upgrade version for £14.99. Downloaded. Not put it on PC yet as not had time.

£14.99. ??? where from..?

Good argument, I like how your presented your opinions and brought a well balanced counter to the table... ;)

Im tempted by the price and the fact I can have 5 licenses for it. I might just do it over the next few days. Would get my dad off Vista!

I simply followed the lack of any in the op, or yours ;)

Simply google and you will see how it is still the same, not.

Mine was a personal opinion, rather than a disagreement. Therefore I have no need to put any points across - in fact my post completely sums up why I have no desire to upgrade don't you think?

Why should I, when I have not need to upgrade nor do I care whether it is the same or not. I was simply pointing your your rather impolite post when you put down another's opinion without providing any reason why.

I will be avoiding it as long as possible. Horrible UI, the way the two seamingly seperate UIs work is rubbish and just slows down work.

It should be more like a linux install where during install it asks you which UI you want to install Desktop or Metro.

Mine is on download as we speak. Waiting for work so I can finish it off. I have seen the pro's and con's. Im going to wait and see tonight.

I gave the reason why, his expression that windows 8 is the same as windows 7 is inherently rubbish.

If you cant be bothered to do the basic work for a discussion on a subject you don't have the knowledge to know if I was putting anyone down or actually stating a fact.
That will I suspect be lost on you though so, bye bye :)
Not into arguing for the sake of it ta.

Rubbish

Had it on my laptop for a few days now and really liking it. Once you clear out all the guff on the start screen and replace it with your own it makes a huge difference. I'm suprised how little I miss the desktop. Although its a click away if I need it. Not sure ill stick it on my main pc as I don't really see what its offering over win 7 ultimate. But for 25 quid its not the spawn of the devil people would have you believe.

I just dont see the point in it, when for most stuff your forced to use desktop anyway. Such as photo editing with a few folders open and photoshop and photomatix open.

Does anyone know if you have to pay £25 for each machine you want to upgrade or can you upgrade several machines with one license?

I can get windows 8 pro update for £24.99, not sure what to do though? :)
