Hi All...

I'm going to subscribe to a photography magazine today... but am torn between Practical Photography and Digital Photography.

Which do you guys have, and what am I likely to benefit from?

Thank you!!

neither

seriously - spend the subscription money on a good book (plenty of threads about those) and then learn the rest by trial and error. Share photos with other photographers and get feedback.

I tend to buy them both when very bored, but would not take out a sub on either.

AP (Weekly) is my usual read on a tuesday.

kinda :agree:

Depends on your skill level or how comfortable you are with your work. If you feel you can benefit more from the magazine editorial then subscribe to either. I've read both in my time, but practical photography has been around for a very long time, i'm surprised it has anything more to teach you. It's probably dipping into it's back catalog for articles.

I used to subscribe to PP, but it soon gets very repetitive (as do all camera mags). I currently subscribe to Photography Monthly, but that's starting to get repetitive too. As NC said, you'd be better off investing in a decent photography book.

I subscribe to Digital Photo. Although the magazine content isn't particularly useful the cover disk you get is full of Photoshop tutorials which are very good and you usually get some freebees like borders and textures etc. TBH though after about 12 months it tends to repeat the same things again

Okay, I already have the Magic Lantern Guide and Understanding Exposure... I was just looking for som elight reading too..

I'll do a bit more digging around :)

I get PP on subscription, as it tends to be more about ideas, and then buy DP as and when there is something on the disk or an article about photoshop that I want.

Digital Camera for me, great section on B&W this month plus a free Canon Mag.

Aww I thought this was going to be one of those "Chuck Norris vs A Bengal Tiger - which would win" virtual fight threads :(

The Tiger - just ask at Seigfried and Roy! ;)

Well if the fight had been Sigfried & Roy vs a Bengal Tiger then my money would be on the tiger.

However, I think Chuck Norris would roundhouse kick the tiger's ass

I always peruse the photo mags section in smiths when I'm in town and buy any that cover a subject I want more info on. But have to agree with a lot of posts here that they are so repetative even across mags - the amount of "canon 400d vs" articles I've seen is unbelievalble.

too right he would - Chuck rules!

So all we need is for Chuck Norris and Siegfried (Roy's not well) to fight it out using rolled up copies of PP and DP and we can settle this argument once and for all in a mature and responsible way. ;)

Neither!

I agree with Nigel buy a book. Skin is a good read and you will learn so myuch more than the title suggests.

Go to your local Borders and pick up an Art or foreign photography magazine. Brit mags will alternate between family portraits and landscapes ALL YEAR!

Monthly Practical Amateur Digital Photography for Black & White Outdoors Professionals is my favourite magazine.

Michael.

Ive been spending a small fortune on mags in the last year.
Now, instead of 3 or 4 mags a month Ive started treating myself to one book a month instead.
I do sometimes lapse if I find myself in Smiths though & usually come away with Digital Photographer or DSLR User.

Another vote for neither. If I see one more cover saying 'take the perfect landscape/portrait etc' or 'great winter skies!' I will break down and cry.

PS: British Journal of Photography is good, although more for editorial content than tutorials. It's only a couple of quid too.
