Just picked up the newest issue of Practical Photography and was so disappointed. The reason I was disappointed was because of how narrow minded the judges were in picking the winning photos for the Movement comp just gone. Every photo was basically the same and just had a bit of blur.

I'm just getting more and more disappointed with every issue of the mag.

Just wondering what you guys think?

stopped buying magazines like that when i found they really didnt teach me anymore.

I used to read PP every month and had it on subscription. Then realised that they have no new idea's and its possible to know whats in thi months edition by looking at the same time last year!

Time to move on I reckon. I find that I learn more from photography blogs I've subscribed to on the net that in magazines. I've stopped buying photography magazines now. Blogs seems to be a lot better because the content is instant and so is the feedback that readers give. You could look at one issue of a magazine for a month but in the same time the amount of new content on the blogs is just too much to ignore.

i used to subscribe to both Digital Photo and Practical Photography but found that Digital Photo continually go over the same topics month after month and in fact, as mentioned above, some articles are practically the same as issued 12months earlier, because of this i stopped my subscription earlier this year.... i do still like Practical Photography but feel that this is getting a bit similar and feel they need to pull their socks up and be a little more creative... one of the main reasons i still subscribe is for the David Noton and wildlife articles... maybe its time i changed...

I'm going to let my subscription run out for Practical Photography, same over and over!
Going for a pro mag then ask questions of my peers on T/P.
Jim

anyone recommend something better? i've tried a few now but without buying month after month its difficult to get a proper feel for them... any mag looks decent from your read of your first copy..

I don't think any of them are worth subscribing to, as they'll cover each other within 6 to 12 months.

My advice is to look at the new issues o.f each mag at WHSmith etc. and just buy the ones that appeal to you. You'll save loads that way

suppose you went for the subscription offer tarmac chaser, which did'nt seem a bad deal actually to say the mini trekker AW costs around £60... and you get the mag aswell...
i must admit this was the way i was tempted in and ended up paying £80 for an 18month subscription, but i also got the mini trekker as a free gift...

After fifteen postings of advice or complaints not one has mentioned contacting the magazine and complaining, i doubt they read this site?

I contacted the editor via their forums and made my views quite clear.

As for recommendations, I still quite like Digital SLR Photography but other than that I stick to the pro ones now, oh and Black and White Photography if I like what they have that month.

Rather than WH Smiths, try Borders bookshop, they have a much better selection, including some imports.

I did try a couple of issues of PhotoPlus Magazine when it came out (The sponsors of this months competition round) and I found it better than Practical Photography and Photography Monthly, et al. Also had some good stuff because it was specific to Canon users. I too have the problem with magazines just repeating the same basic stuff over and over. I suppose they do have to cater to newbs, but there's nothing in them at all for the advanced amateur, which disappoints me.

This isn't a braggin session, (or a pimping session for the competition ;)) though...lol

I prefer the Photoshop based ones now, like Digital Photo.

I Looked at the competition pictures for movement, and have to say i agree, either what was entered was all the same, or im missing something. the winner looked like a well thought out shot, and the last runner up was from a bike race. but the rest were just out of focus or a shot taken on the wrong settings. there was one of a dog running round at what i would assume was crufts or equivelant, the dog is blurred, the bg is blurred the trainer is blurred. nothing is in focus or anything, if someone could explain how this makes a good shot to me, then please do.

Marcel, i too have bought a couple of the photoplus and found that to be pretty good, i quite like the parts where a pro photographer takes out a reader and helps them out with a tog issue or advice on new equipment...

Am looking for a new mag after dropping Digital Photo a couple of months ago [which they keep sending despite me not paying] as it was the same old thing, 30% CS processes to teach you how to add bit's into photo's, 60% adverts and 10% interesting content.

What really irks me is that the images people send in *always* get hammered and are given suggestions like you should have cloned in some foreground interest or a new sky etc....

Maybe they were the only entries they got  It wouldn't surprise me given the terms and conditions of these publications

quite possible, but they did "claim" to have recieved lots of motorsport pics so im unsure:shrug:

as they say though, each to there own.

Was subscribed to PP for around 2 years, then I had learnt enough from it I felt.

it seems we're all singing from the same hymn sheet, although i don't think PP is all that bad but i just wish they'd change their content. photographers like to read about other likeminded folks and their experiences (imo thats why these forums are so popular) it would be good for different pro's to take an average reader on a shoot and write about the perspective from both togs i.e. troubles, equipment techniques. readers equipment could be another part .... i'm sure theres a good mag out there somewhere... or is it time we decided to put pen to paper and compiled our own....

cherry rig how did they rate them on there card, theone they send back,

mine was techniccaly good but lacks impact.

I seem to get that every month :bang:

What I do now is look at the content and pick up which ever one has something I want to read about.

I have no loyalty to any particular mag these days. It's a bit like Bike magazines, they all do the same thisng with a slightly different approach.

I'm starting to think that Photo Plus is a Photoshop magazine for photographers.....

I subscribed for 18 months, WHY!! :bang: after 6 i am regretting it.

and it always

Portriture which i have no interest in!

I don't ask for my photos back. You say that just get back "techniccaly good but lacks impact" cos I'm sure thats what everyone gets. Some guy had a big rant in the magazine about it. I'll try finding the thing

I went with practical photography for the diffuser/reflector deal.

Ive learnt a few more tricks with photoshop, and I like looking at the pictures. Thats about it, pretty much everything else has been covered elswhere.
Nothing amazingly groundbreaking in terms of proffessional hints and tips.

I read Digital Photographer. It seems a little more 'professional' based than tryign to teach people how to use point and shoots. Oh and the Photoshop tutorials are great.

After 12 months I've started to find the tutorials are now being repeated, just using different start images.

Must remember to cancel subscription :bang:
