As a sergeant with 23 years 'in' I know exactly what does and what doesn't constitute an OPSEC issue...
I ran it past the PIC Director here in Lash - an RAF Squadron-Leader (Major equivalent), beforehand...the Bosses of the Kandahar PIC and the Bastion PIC are also in on the joke...you really need to go away and stop being such a...actually I have no idea...just go away - you're interfering with my positive aura...

You never mentioned that in your opening post and even if it is true it does not change my opinion.

I wonder if the SIB would take the same view as you?

I never mentioned it because it's none of your concern - the proper authorites were informed beforehand, permission was granted and I acted within guidelines - this is my job after all - you haven't deigned to enlighten us with your own particular qualifications for commenting in the way you have...

Even officers at PJHQ have been found to be sadly lacking when it comes to what can and cannot be released to an open source such as this - and I say again...since it's my job, I'm perhaps more aware of that than you are..

As to accusing me of being economical with the truth..well it's easy to insult someone online isn't it? Perhaps you and I could have a get-together when I complete my Tour next year and you can attempt to debrief me in person?

I'd like that...really...

dude, its a practical joke, nothing serious, and not in any way malicious. the guys and girls out there are proffesionals working hard in what is probably the most dangerous enviroment in the world. what the OP is suggesting is abit of fun amongst the tension, you know, keeping the morale steady? If you think its not appropriate, then its a good job you're not out there with them. :thumbs:
 
...and for anyone who gives a flying ****...and because it's just possible Keith may actually put in a call to SIB (which they'd be bound to investigate, meaning a grand PITA for us all here), I've flagged this up to the junior Bosses (again) and the MI det and the RMP just to make sure...and they're happy too...

Keith...we have a PM facility for things like this, you know... way to put a wet blanket over things...
 
My thoughts:

Those guys serving over there need to let off steam and have a laugh just like the rest of us, probably even more so....
....lets all remember its a shooting war over in Afghanistan and people are getting killed, and I guess in those circumstances Army banter kicks in, and people NEED to have a laugh just to feel a bit normal once in a while.

I have nothing but admiration and respect for the Sarge and his Colleagues, they are doing a cracking job that very few of us could do.

Remember the last time you took the p**s out of someone? Yeah, there you go.............:D
 
Don't know that he's recieved any yet - he may also just think it's for real...
We've had a slight mail back-log, possible due to the strike, but maybe also because of 'other stuff' happening over here...nuff said.
 
There's a lot to be said for a camera on a monopod with a remote release, whilst the operator keeps his head down...

And in true forces humour, can I have your little black book of models if you don't come back ;)

Staggering!!! :shake: Having done my time (23 yrs) and much of it directly involved with personnel security, both policy and implementation, I can see nothing wrong in what has been posted. Nothing has been posted that isn't in the public domain.

The armed forces serving in places such as this require a massive sense of humour - it helps compensate for the lack of political support but that's another story. The practical jokes and sense of humour help build camaraderie and esprit de coeur.

I think you'll find that the BFPO system is suffering a degree of constipation at the mo as a result of the sheer volume of 2kg parcels en route to LG. :shrug: :D

Way to go, people in bad situations trying to put a bit of humour in their lives, and someone like you tries to put a dampner on it.

Why is it such a bad thing that a british forces address was posted??? Are you scared a terrorist may get hold of it, or have you forgotten they are in Afghanistan.

I think this is a great practical joke. though im not in the forces, spending 6 months a year on a little ship pulling 12 hours shifts you need this kind of humour to keep your spirits up :D some people need to lighten up.....

This thread has had me PMSL for the past 10 minutes :D
 
This is absolutely terrible.

Posting a soldiers address on a public forum is extremely thoughtless and extremely dangerous.

Its not about lightening up its about personal security, any idiot could post something of a dangerous nature to this Lt Col

It may be funny to some but if he opens something that goes bang posted to him from some radical nutter I doubt it would be so funny.

The OP needs a kick up the backside imo, he is breaking a fundamental rule in security.

did you read the thread? did you read Arkadys posts? all the info is in the public domain and i do not think it would have been posted if a highly experienced officer and his superiors deemed it in any way dangerous or inapropriate. Its not a home address its no different to arkady posting his contact address for people who wish to support the lads out there and send care packages.

I happen to have served in the Army for 24 years, recently retired, and I can assure you that behaviour would not be acceptable.

Yes of course...a huge bomb could be sent to him - or maybe a baggie full of anthrax - do you honestly think that our parcels aren't screened? Or since the completion of your 24 years service has that particular routine security procedure slipped your mind? What drugs have you been smoking lately? Now that you can of course...
I had aerosols removed by the BFPO staff when people on here tried to post them out, unaware that they were classified as Dangerous Air Cargo...do you seriously think anything remotely dangerous could get through...?
Parcels are X-Rayed; scanned and sniffed by explosives and drugs dogs - just so we don't forget that we're not allowed to drink alcohol or smoke recreational substances - which is a laugh considering we're in the place where 90% of the world's Opium now comes from!!!

I've had to deal with people like you my whole career and one thing I've learned: people like you are a royal PITA, both when serving and now that you've retired - I've explained how this came about and 'we' all think it's hilarious when the colonel beams at all his mail in the mornings...that's two majors, a captain, a FCO major-equivalent and two sergeants...yes we do know what's best...eh!

...and calling me a liar on a public forum is a short-cut to an even earlier form of 'retirement'...on that you may be most assured.

Right chaps, thats enough I think. Quaker, you have registered your opinion and thats as much as is needed. I think if this thread was in anyway a security breach, if the Lt Col was in anyway concerned about the sudden deluge of highly scented fanmail, it wouldn't have taken an internet genius to google it and find it. As no contact has been made by anyone in authority, I think we leave the battle lines at the door and move on please.
