Right I am new to Photography and just recently got my first camera but was wondering what PP programs I should be looking to get to grips with.

At the minute I have CS3 which I am really good with, but mostly just creating graphics for websites and such. Used it for over 5 years.

Now I realise editing photos is a different ball game but what sort software should I look at getting.

Thank you in advance.

CS3 should be good for photo editing - did you get any software with the camera - DPP

not sure if CS3 supports raw with 400d - I have cs3 and does not support 60D - but i use DPP to manage the RAW file and then convert and use cs3

Getting to grips with CS3 PS (or do you have illustrator) should do most things you will need, unless you want to spend a lot upgrading to CS 5 or 6 I would stick with what you have. If you know about creating graphics with layers etc etc it should be easy to start using it for your photography

Have you thought about joining in the "how would you edit this photo" thread? I am constantly learning new bits of photoshop doing that

CS3 is a full-on editing programme and a very, very good one. Don't confuse yourself by adding anything else until you know what you may need. The only possible problem is likely to be that CS3 may not automatically convert RAW files from your cameras, but you can get a free .dng converter that will do the job. If you tend to shoot jpeg, this will not be a problem.

I was wondering about RAW as I was planning to shoot in RAW as it is better for editing afterwards.

I had a quick go in photoshop just now as I am familiar with it already.

Yup, go for the RAW! It gives a superior result in most cases, and isn't any harder to learn than any other part of Photoshop.

CS3 will do the job well, you should be able to do pretty much any editing with it.

Yes I think I will stick with CS3, really comfortable with it and used it for years so I know the ins & outs of it.

I can get a hold of lightroom from work so may use that to catalogue pictures once I get some shots I like.

Right thank you for all the replies.

I just took a load of Raw files off my camera they had the extension (IMGxxxx.cr2). I had no idea what this was but i tried to see if it would open in CS3 and to my surprise it did.

I did not have to download any extra programs or anything and I was able to play around in Photoshop no problem.

The Program that opens up the photo at first is in fact called Camera Raw 2 (CR2). DUH!!

I had no idea it was installed and it must have came with the CS3 pack I got all those years ago.

The CR2 is a canon file format for canon raw images (nikon use NEF) it's nothing to do with photoshops camera raw name as such, just a coincidence.
For CS3 the latest version of adobes camera raw is 4.6.
