PP to Website workflow ..How do you do it?

Hello,

I am starting to get a collection of pictures, and would like to create a web porfolio in a blog format to show off my work.

My Current workflow is very much based around editing in Lightroom, and then occaisionally printing the best ones. Once i have identified a picture for print, i usually begin by cropping to the size i want to print to in lightroom.

So websites has thrown me slightly. I have managed to create the wordpress site and arranged hosting, but i am wondering what workflow people have for publishing their pictures to a uniform size, and where would this take place?

I imagine, no-one wants their website resizing their pictures, so i assume you select a size (width?) and then stick to this in lightroom?

Does that mean you are editing each picture in lightroom, or are you batch processing this somewhere? How are you stopping your pictures being undesirably cropped?

I hope what i have said makes sense.

I guess i could do with understanding people workflows rather than get it wrong now, and have to start all over again.

Is it something like; open in Lightroom, do all PP, export to 800px width, upload to site?

I don't use Lightroom, but do follow pretty much the workflow you've outlined above.
Personal pictures aside, the ones I take for the local Under 11 Sunday League get the following treatment.

Post processing of RAW files in Capture one - All WB/Exposure/Cropping etc.
Export to a "Converted" Folder
Batch process in PS, to add watermarks, and resize the lot.
Saved into a "For Web" subfolder.
Then I use Jalbum, for the galleries, slideshow and purchase options
FTP to the website
Update the links on the page got the new gallery.

(I've got a Wordpress Blog with a page with Links to the Jalbum Galleries)

All the other photos on the blog are hosted on Flickr (so I don't use up all of the webspace) and linked back from the blog. For these, If I've accidentally uploaded them in large sizes, I re-size the links as I post them.

Hope this makes sense.

There is a Flickr plugin that will let you select what size you want the photos to be when you 'import' them.
 
Re-size in LR to whatever size you want them to appear on the web. Don't let any web programme re-size them for you - keep it under your control - and it's so easy in LR. They don't all have to be the same size - just make them whatever size works for your web layout.
 
You could have a preset in lightroom for WebPics. Just do your usual workflow e.g. Crop, White Balance, Exposure... etc in lightroom get them as you would for producing a print.

In lightroom for your preset, set the size for "Long Edge" you will need to experiment with this it depends how you want them viewed, or how many on a webpage..etc say for arguments sake 3-400 pixels.

Now for web you really don't need a high resolution so set the DPI at around 72 or 96. You won't really notice it on screen - Do an experiment if you like export the same pic at 72 and 300 DPI, and have a look.

Select the "Sharpen for Screen" option

Save to a folder e.g Pics for Web

Then FTP to your site. They should be more than adequate for a website.
