Power sockets in bathrooms

When my parents moved into the last house they shared (before Mum died), it still needed a few finishing touches so a mate and I (both in the building trade at the time) did the work. To keep ourselves safe when using power tools outdoors, we used a plug-in RCD but when we tried testing it, we found that although we lost supply, our RCDs didn't trip out. The one on the distribution board in the house was newer and faster so was beating ours to it!

And they bloody well hurt as I found out once when I forgot to turn one off before entering an enclosure
Some years ago, amate of mine, nipped behind a tree to take a leak while we were out shooting, Peeing with his back to the large Oak,
He failed to notice although the fence was mainly barbed wire, to top strand was electrified.
I can only surmise that he was being cocky [sic] and try to pee over the top wire on the fence.

The yelp from behind the tree suggested that he didn't manage it.
It still cracks me up to this day every time I remember that :D

For some reason some berk installed a 13 amp electric socket in my bathroom ceiling within a couple of feet of a shower. They plugged their Xmas lights into it.

Holy F+ck !!!

I think anything electric in a bathroom apart from lights and extractors is bad.
I also converted our electric shower to combi fed about 15 years ago on advice from a plumber who was putting the boiler in.

He simply said 30 AMPS within an inch of water leading to your head?

Yeah, we all do. But the whole point of this thread is that if we were having this conversation in France or Germany, we probably wouldn't think it's bad, and nobody seems to know why that is. I'd like to know just as much as Jonathan does.

I am not sure if I lived in Germany or France I would feel any different to be honest. Its my common sense more than anything.
I have seen some very sensible people over my time do some crazy things with electrics, as people say here electric fan heaters in bathrooms for winter....yikes just run an extension from the landing !

Google tells me that I'm not the first person to ask this question ;)

The general consensus appears to be that different countries do things differently.

I did spot that most French devices don't even have fuses. Apparently it's usual for circuits to have 16A distributor board fuses so there's no real need for 13 amp fuses in the plugs. Actually, I can't remember the last time I changed a fuse in a plug. The RCDs really do seem to trip instead of fuses blowing.

BTW Mythbusters says don't iron in the bathroom if you have epsom salts in the bath....

The maximum safe dose (assuming no contraindications) is 3.2 g in any 24 hrs. Or30-40 mg/kg in children. Assuming @Ricardodaforce is neither a child and probably weighs a little more then 20kg he's pretty safe
Interesting, but NICE and the BNF recommends no more than 2.4mg daily in divided doses, and this is not a maintainance but a loading dose in an acute phase.
In fact latest research (published this year) finds only 1.2g is safe and more is linked to increased CV problems

Yes yes yes all fascinating. But when I get a headache I shall do what I have done for years, take a 600mg ibuprofen; and sorry to disappoint you I don't have "bad kidneys" nor have I had a "heart attack".

You've done a sterling job in making your point.

Is this the same NICE who base many of their recommendations on cost over efficacy?

Yeah, an actual proper doctor put me on 2.4mg a day once. I had to buy 2 packets a day at separate tills in Asda to comply with the stupid ridiculous UK laws. I felt like I was on Breaking Bad.
