Potential D3 to D700 ??

Looking for some advice over my Nikon D3. I've had mine now for about 18 months, and whilst I do love it, the one thing about it I don't is the bulk and weight. To that end, I've been considering a part ex or sell of the D3 to finance a D700.

I know the D3 has some unique features, but to be honest, I dont think it's anything I'd really miss, but would obviously gain the pop up flash of the D700 and it's smaller more compact dimensions (which I could add a grip to if I wanted).

Just wondering if anyone has gone down this route and has regretted it or thinks it was the best thing they did. Any advice appreciated.

I'm guessing as they share the same general internal DNA image quality is identical between them ?

Problem is if you add a grip it's actually bigger and heavier than a D3!

I'll be doing the same, D3 -> D700. For the amateur there is absolutely IMO no advantage unless you shoot sports (nope), take the camera out to jungles or harsh environments (nope) and little else..

I did this primarily because the D3wheel was a little to far away from my thumb.

You might miss the larger viewfinder of the D3, but a Nikon DK-17M magnifying viewfinder for your D700 should soon compensate for that ;).

(The rubber eye cup is not supplied with the DK-17M, BTW - I just added it to make manual focusing easier).

As mentioned earlier, one of the advantages of the D700 is the pop-up flash. I use mine a lot to trigger my SB-900s. Much better than adding even more weight and bulk to your set up by putting a flash gun (or an SU-800) on top of your (already bulky) D3, IMHO :).

Not knocking the D3, obviously, it's brilliant at what it does and more ergonomic than a D700 with a grip (or so I've heard). Two fantastic DSLRs - you can't really lose either way !

I might be interested in going the other way if you are interested. I have a D700 and i need a D3, for nothing more than the second card slot, i like to have the instant backup when shooting weddings.

I am in the early stages of considering a D700 over my D3 @crashtestmac so may consider your offer. I have done about 86000 actuations on my D3. Let me know what you think.

I think that you're in the wrong forum to be making trading offers!

Soot, a guy that I know replaced a D3 with a D700 and seems to be more than happy with it.

Sorry crashtestmac, must have missed your PM. Thanks for the offer but I've decided to keep the D3, but actually might add the D700 as a backup.

Guys, Just a rule reminder.
Trading out-side the classified section
is against the rules, as is trading via PM.
Both may carry infractions.

Nobody believes you when you tell them that, but it's true - can you imagine having to tell people you swapped to a D3 because you need a smaller camera?
