I'm a bit confused as there's an option to have your work critiqued, but if you don't choose this does that mean people shouldn't put anything negative?

It's just there's posts every now and then where I look at the images and think 'that's not very good' due to lighting or focus etc. Yet as they've not selected 'critique' all they get is a few 'nice pic' or whatever comments.

What's the point? Am I missing something? Surely people giving critique makes you a better tog... so why not select it?

Or are some people just too precious about their photos and just want their ego's stroked?

I always hold back if it doesn't have critique specified as imagine a lot of people don't want to hear negative things about their images. I think the rules are there for that reason too... just seems pretty pointless to me. :shrug:

Anything posted in the 'Feedback & Critique' section is open to constructive (not destructive) crit, whether it has the prefix added or not.
The 'Photos for Pleasure' section is for just posting photos to show and where no crit is requested.

Ahh ok... so if for example someone posted a pic and it was out of focus, and everyone was saying 'nice pic', it would be acceptable to say 'it's a nice shot but unfortunately the image is a little out of focus, and you've also clipped the highlights whilst also cutting off half their arm' for example?
 
Absolutely - I give and get that sort of thing all the time :)

Cool... I might start participating in that section a bit more if that's the case. I never really post any comments as hardly anyone selects critique and I don't see the point in just going 'nice pic'... well unless it's an amazing pic and then I might say that
 
I sometimes don't know what to say about a pic so I don't comment but I try to offer crit as I feel able. Sometimes I just like a photo but am unsure why so I just make some positive remark but generally I do my best to offer some helpful advice - it's helpful to others to receive it.
 
Just don't say great shot or great set all the time plz :lol:
 
Another problem is a lot of the time you have no idea of the experience of the photographer, whilst harsh comments may be useful for the season shooter than can be crushing for someone inexperienced, and it may put them off submitting in the future which would be a shame. It is an ongoing problem and I've no idea of a real solution.
 
I have spaits of critiqueing images but generally don't as I seldom put anything up for others to comment on.

What I always try to do is to be constructive so if I think something is wrong with the image I'll say so but offer a suggestion as to how to avoid it in the future or counter my negativity by saying something positive too. Always end on a positive note as it takes some of the sting out of the negative bits :D

How about something beside members profile pictures along the lines of beginner, experienced and professional? That way if someone who is a beginner posts an exceptionally good photo they will get favourable critique that will hopefully boost their confidence enabling them to strive onward in their photography. Likewise if a professional posts a photo that others deem below par the critique could serve as an indication that they need to work harder!

That sounds like a plan, but at some stage a beginer will become better and progress up the ranks, who will decide when that beginer is ready to go onto the next level.

I suppose that would be up to the individual. When they feel they are ready to accept harsher crit they could upgrade their level to something like intermediate or experienced.

I rarely post pics because I have no interest in what other people think of them (in a C&C way) although I'm happy to have my ego stroked at every possible opportunity :love:

Yes that would work. ..self appointment...there will be tears but it would bring some clarity for all involved eventually.

A good idea would be a kangaroo style court.
Each picture posted for critique should be graded as beginner, intermediate expert etc etc.
When commenting on the said picture you have to leave a vote on what level you believe that standard of photo would fall into.
A collection of such stats would set the level for you.

We might need a few levels though, even an ungradeable level....

I like your thinking comrade, a sort of photographic OGPU field troika, dig the hole, fill out the paperwork, load the pistols and bring in the photographer for questioning.

I recommend leather aprons to keep your uniform clean.
 
The same could be said for those giving the crit.

Are they qualified to give their opinion? Have they anything to back up their gradings?

It is/always will be a subjective and emotive topic. People who post pics can always add a 'Give it to me hard' (nude & glam), 'I'm building a foundation portfolio' (Architecture & Urban), 'I'm aiming to be number 1' (sports), 'I want to be a leader of the pack' (Nature wild & free), 'I can see myself going places' (transport) tags to help those giving the crit an idea of the posters vision.

The above tags are copyright of some balding old fart and all rights are embossed on my toilet roll.

Better still, just say what you like and why, what you don't and why. It's in the :rules:

Me too...why post in the "Feedback and Critique" section if you don't want critique? seems pretty daft to me. If you don't want constructive criticism, whether it be positive or negative, THEN post in the "Photo's for Pleasure" section. :cuckoo:
 
i think the key to the feedback and crit section is how constructive you are.

In my day to day work I always endevour to try if there is a negative then to explain why its a negative and how to improve it.

for example i will throw one of my critique posts in for examination

ok i never did a portrait before and was bored so trying something quirky.

I posted something up then mattd gave me what i would say is perfect crit his post contained all the perfect things for crit

1. his personal opinion on the photo "Not working for me sorry"

2. a suggestion on how to improve "I would be tempted to increase the contrast and do away with the selected colour on the one eye."

and the best thing is I went away and changed it and matt returned with positive feedback,

"Miles better, I would still push it a little more. "



what im trying to get at is the crit section in my opinion is probably for people like me who want to get better or get good advice. follow matt's lead give good crit and follow it up if you can.
 
Higgeh - Thats the ideal way of things working, its just a certain few who only seem to post to boost their ego and spit the dummy if anyone dares to criticise.

Its strange, but they also seem to be ones who join numerous groups on flickr to be told how good they are...

If you're getting good crit it will only help you improve - just with a smaller ego!

Asking this question in another way, what does selecting a "critique" prefix to your post in the feedback section mean?

(I have seen the "New Critique Posts" in the "New Posts" drop down menu, so it must be there for a reason.)

I think its a specific request for indepth crit - everthing posted in feedback and critique is open to comment but those with the prefix really want it
