Posting Gumtree Items

Hey everyone :)

Currently got an item for sale on Gumtree which I had hoped to sell locally for cash. I've had a couple of people message me and ask if I'll post it to them if they pay for postage as well. I'd like to sell the item as the money will go into my savings, but I'm worried about getting ripped off and losing the money and the item too...

Has anyone ever had a problem of a buyer paying for an item and then raising a dispute with PayPal to try and get their money back whilst keeping the item? From what I understand the buyer gets lots of protection when paying "for goods or services", but none with the gift option. I don't want to say I'll accept PayPal and get screwed over (and also pay fees!), but I know how dodgy it sounds to a buyer if I say I'll only take PayPal gift!

The only other option I can think of is to do it by bank transfer, but I'm not sure how safe it is to give a stranger my sort code, bank account number and name!

Does anyone else offer to post items or do they generally just say cash on collection only? It's not an overly expensive item, only £90, but I just don't want to get screwed lol

Cheers then! :)

Make them pay for recorded, tracked and signed for otherwise they can say they haven't received it.if they say it's damaged then it's insured up to 500 quid but I'd still rather sell locally

....and only post to verified paypal address...

Have never had a good experience on there

I bought my first camera on gumtree. I just use it as an introduction to local buyers/sellers and ignore the wealthy Nigerians wishing to make me rich :D

Bought and sold plenty of things on Gumtree, with absolutely no problems. Being able to inspect the item yourself is sometimes far better than any photo or eBay description.

But I've always refused to post, despite being asked multiple times, it's too much faff. I've almost always sold the item regardless, without having to resort to posting.

I would opt for a bank transfer and get them to pay for special delivery. Maybe get their phone number and other details and give them a call first?

Collection only on Gumtree.. Too many scam stories

+1.

Payments can be reversed, fake stories be can and are made up. Never post.

Cash on collection is usually fine as long as you don't advertise your home contents to potential crooks.
