Well, kinda.

We have had no post since before Christmas. So last week we called the sorting office - "Oh, no there isn't any post waiting here". Okay we thought, maybe just a Christmas backlog.

Yesterday we phoned again as we still had not received anything despite knowing several items had been sent - "Yes your post has been stopped, you need to come in and see one of the Managers". Weird we thought.

So my other half goes to the sorting office this morning and it transpires that one of our (indoor) cats has been waiting on the downstairs windowsill and upon seeing the Postie coming up the path he (the cat) would run to the letterbox. Apparently the posties fingers had been got several times, the last being quite bad so they put a stop on delivering our mail.

So we now have to fit one of those cages to the rear of the letterbox and get Royal Mail to come and inspect it before they will restart delivery of our mail.

The offending violent creature:

Put up one of the locking outdoor post boxes.
We did that because the front door opens such that putting a cage on the back wasn't an option.
No need to postal instection either.

And yes...that beast is clearly a killer.
Can see that just by looking at it's, ummm....furry "scratch my belly NOW" tummy

yes i think the outdoor box is probably the way to go as the door opens up onto the banister. plus the mesh on the indoor ones is far to big to stop a kitty paw.

he does like his tummy rubbed :D

That's crazy to stop your post without telling you, or informing you of the previous incidents. You could have had urgent post you were waiting for and I don't see why the post office should be allowed to secretly keep that.

true, it is frustrating that they told us nothing was waiting last week. in fact they said at least one item had been returned to sender as it had been there for longer than 2 weeks. but then how would they tell us if they weren't delivering post..

I can understand why they stopped it, but surely there is an obligation on them to let you know why immediately. I also agree a cage would be pointless, even if you had opening space for one, the cat will simply sit on top of it and poke paws through.

Not what i was expecting:D such a furball lol .. my cat runs to the door every time he hears postie because he's hoping there will be elastic bands on them, which he's not allowed as he eats them:mad:

Our cat does that, she allows me to rub and tickle her belly, when she gets bored of that she puts her foot in my hand and I have to hold her foot. :)
If my wife tries, the cat curls up around her hand claws from all four paws dig in along with the fangs.

maybe we should write in to the DM

to be fair apparently all of the sorting office staff had a good laugh about it being a cat rather than a dog.

i dont know whether its the rustly paper noise or whether he's just trying to catch whatever is coming through the slot.

thinking about it, we havent had any take away menus for a while either o_O

Well its more effective than a no junk mail notice

You have done it now.......the postie will be leaving rubber bands on your path.........:D

Next we'll be obligated to leave a warn drink and selection of snacks out for the hard working posties!

Well we do that for Santa when he leaves us presents,
so why not the postie? :D

Okso having been on the receiving end of cat attacks, give me the dogs any day (y)

Many years ago had a cat that used to hide under parked cars and dive out to attack ankles of anyone that
walked down the drive, not saying how I stopped it attacking me though ;)

More recently on one delivery there is a cat that does actually attack who ever is putting stuff through the door
Damn thin gets it leg an claws out as the post goes in to get the hand on the other side.
I was lucky to never actually get caught but despite being warned a couple of my colleagues were
and got some very nasty painful scratches.

Problem you seem to have is the mail has been stopped and I bet somewhere in amongst it is the letter telling you, have to
say our manager normally goes out and talks to the people concerned to agree on a solution

I was going to say they should have put it in writing to you..

Yep couldn't agree more, but people often just ignore it, hence out manager visiting and telling people that deliveries are suspended until they do
actually do something, but to be honest this is normally for dogs or badly maintained access

fwiw we have not had any visits but then we both work full time and commute so not around during normal working hours.

That's one if the reasons I got the outside wall mounted box...didn't need to stay home and wait until RM deigned to visit to see an inside cage.

really they shouldn't be putting their fingers though the letter box

Oh really and how does a cat putting it's leg out through the box equate to that, which the cat in my post did.
Sorry but we have to open the flap to get the post in :(
Oh and I've had dogs that push the mouths out too

Maybe poah was commenting on the original post. Fwiw our flap is high enough for the cat to reach but not to get a paw out through it. The postie would have had to have inserted a hand.

(Not aimed at you Mike, I know you're commenting more on grammar :D )

I'm not getting offended, merely stating an observation...pet owners get awfully defensive ;)

I think it's pretty fair to say that no one is this thread has though, we all know cats way too well! The only thing that keeps my postie safe is having an inner door, or I just know the little [actually, quite BIG] sods would play with the post/his fingers every time.

Remind me never to come and visit :p

they make great models though, when you need something to point a camera at :D
And you can sit on them and have races too, the size of them :D

I was thinking that, unless the cat can push open the metal flap on the inside whilst its other paw is pushed through the brushes, standing stretched out on its legs....Superb cat if it can do all that, or a postman that is fingering the box a bit too much....

But regardless of the exact details, as this is a photo forum it would be fun to see the pictorial :), stopping mail delivery without notification is not on.

I consider ourselves lucky, the same postie for 15 years, he loves dogs and cleverly has a treat in his pocket. That will make any dog in our area sit down and pay attention...Problem solved :)

I think that's a slight exaggeration for those with fine physiques (such as ours, Chris) but Yv might be able to... ;)

FWIW, cats are fairly easy to break bad habits out of. A simple water pistol and a little time. Watch the cat and (in the letter box case) tempt it/them into misbehaviour with a letter (or gloved finger) through the slot then every time it/they show interest in the letter or finger, squirt them. Even water loving cats dislike being squirted! Won't take too long for the cat(s) to associate playing with things poking through the slot with being squirted and they'll stop.

TBF I should have quoted the original post but even then my post isn't directly below yours and as such you're taking a big leap thinking I was replying to yours ;)

Your post said
"really they shouldn't be putting their fingers though the letter box"

which I really thought was a general observation on how you feel
the job should be done, as I said once before, try walking down a street with varying different types of letter boxes and see just how easy it is to
get an envelope through a door, then come back and make a sweeping statement like that.
TBH cats are far more crafty then dogs, height of letterbox doesn't come into it, the can hang onto the door
