maybe this will help with those awkward macro shots

Been thinking about getting one of these but still not sure, will wait till you post a review maybe :)

Scott.

I got one but have yet to really use it. Its tough though, would easily hold a decent SLR

Congrats on the purchase, enjoy it,

I have the SLR version and its fantastic, I use it with the 400d and kit, its holds that easily whether stood up (like a normal 'short' tripod) or wrapped around something. I found it great to photograph waterfalls from bridges and viewing platforms. Will have to try it with the 55-250mm!!

well just a quick test, I've been told we are going shopping:(
I tried a macro shot to the extreme sort of, a 70-300 zoom with vr turned off x2 tele-converter plus raynox, the joby was an the ground with the lens pointing slightly up and the legs of the joby were not touching the lens
shots taken at f25 1/5s shutter iso 250
zoom at 100
joby1.jpg

no vibration

zoom at 200
joby2.jpg

still no vibration

zoom at 300
joby3.jpg

still no vibration:eek:

i tried attaching the joby to the trellis, it gripped it just fine but never got to take a shot because rain stopped play and i have to go shopping
but I'd say its well sturdy and I will have fun playing :D

I have always wondered if they would be strong enough to take heavy lenses but the ones in the pictures look like Canon Pro's? Are the gorilla pod's really that reliable - looking forward to seeing your review

I've perched my 30D and 70-200/2.8 IS on mine and it stayed put. Within reason, there's unlikely to be anything heavy you're going to stick on it.

Bob

PS...Mines the "Zoom" version

can a normal head be added to one of these?

Mine came with a 3/8 - 1/4 converter tied on. It's mated to a Manfrotto 484RC-2 head and can support a D200 with a Sigma 170-500 racked right out. No blur with an 8 second exposure so pretty sturdy! Not tried it as a clampy thing with the long Sigma yet but was fine with a 180 f/2.8.

You should have a PM, Bob.

baah this look so exciting!!! it may also solve a dilema i have....

i have just written a big long thread in the equipment section if you want the full story however - will one of this really cool tripod thingy majigs reduce the need for image stablisation in the cameras body for doing macro work??

I mainly use mine (SLR version) on my A620 or as a flash stand (with clip). It used to hold my 400D ok, but not so well with the Canon 100mm macro as it became too heavy and the legs would buckle.

However, when the legs wrapped round something, like a fence or such then it was fine.

I haven't tried it on my 40D but I have a feeling it would be too heavy for the pod.

Thanks Nod...offer gratefully accepted

I got mine for a bit of indoor table-top macro and it works a treat....easy to get different angles and the legs can be set so that they're not in the way. A focus rail sits neatly on top of it.

am I missing something or you know something :suspect:

You know something but I'm missing something.....I didn't get an adapter with mine...maybe it's something they've added recently or maybe I depatched mine to the recycling bin with the packet....boyish frenzy thing when a new toy arrives.

Bob

Hi

Just noticed this thread and then remembered another forum where someone said the adapter screw is quite small and can be lost easily if the tripod box is opened without care...

I see now its clear, I'm sorry for your loss :D

As we speak, the happy chappies (and chapesses) of our great Post Office (and yes, I really do believe that it IS great) are doing their very best to deliver a suitable adaptor to Bob.

Having posted it and paid the nice lady the correct sum, it occured to me that it might have been cheaper for Bob to have visited a shop that stocks them and just bought one!

Hi,

can't see from the pics where the batteries go, does it take AA's  :exit:

Mike.

i think they're great things, but mine won't hold a 1series body without the legs sliding out like it's had too much to drink....

Seemed a good idea, but by the time you have the "slr zoom" version to hold your somewhat heavy camera/lens combo the gorillapod thing is pretty much the same as a proper lightweight tripod both in size and weight.

If you've got a pro/semi-pro body and some quality (heavy!) glass, this aint gonna do it...

.

My uncle got one of these and has taken some great perspective photos with it. He once hooked it up to a tree branch and used remote shutter release to get some candid photos of the local birds.
