What checks do you go through when post processing?
When do you feel the picture is right?

Can you suggest any guides?

My workflow is;

Import:
I) Import with Capture One as new session with naming convention and copyright info embedded
II) Geotag
III) Into Capture One Pro 7

Then in terms of editing
1) Composition
2) Sharp (100% zoom), I had one last weekend where my tripod had shifted in the tide meaning the shot wasn't sharp
3) Selection
4) Histogram with exposure warnings on
5) Set exposure
6) Set contrast
7) Set saturation
8) Check level (horizons on seascapes etc)
9) Crop as required
10) Set clarity
11) Check lens corrections are applied
12) Out of Capture One 7 into CS6 as TIFF
13) Pixel based editing
14) Dust spotting
15) Check contrast again
16) Noise reduction
17) Sharpening
18) Save as TIFF to library
19) Keywording & titling
20) Add to Media Pro Library
21) Export as required (small jpeg for email, big jpeg for web, whatever)

Thanks Mark

Would you say this process would apply to any type of photography? Or would you change or add anything for portrait/studio photography?

Interesting that you have Noise so late in the workflow, just before sharpening.

Both Topaz, and Nik, recommend Noise to be the first step in the workflow ( after Library functions of course), irrespective of whether you are using their plugins or not.

They say you should de-noise before applying ANY adjustments to your image for best results.

Here's just one link to a Topaz post on this subject, but you can find others on the same.

Hope this is useful.

I do my noise reduction in selected areas, as I edit the image that will bring out noise in different areas in differing amounts. Usually I need very little, the files out of my 5D3 through Capture One 7 are very clean, usually it is only visible in big expanses of the same colour, eg sky, and even then only at 100% magnification.
