Post process on tiff file in PSE????

I'm trying to do some work on a tiff file in PSE, but don't seem to be able to create a layer. Is that normal? Sorry if this is an idiots question, but I hqve never before done layers on tiff files.
 
What layers are you trying to create?

You should have the original image as Background, then any new layer will appear above that.

Cmd (or Ctrl on Windows) + Shift + N should launch the new layer dialog box (at least it does in CS4)

There's no reason why you cannot create a new layer, it's either something you're doing, or not doing that's causing the problem.
 
I opened the file, went to the layers palette and dragged the background into the little icon that usually creates a background copy. Turned into the small "forbidden" sign (crossed circle).

Opened the JPEG version and it worked perfectly.

Don't know what I'm doing or not doing???
 
I've just tried this in PSE 8 and had the same symptom when using a 16bit tiff, an 8bit tiff was fine.
 
Ah, then that's the problem. I developed them into 16bit tif. When I open a raw I do indeed get the notification that PSE has to revert to 8bit, as it does not work with 16bit colour files.

Yeah, it doesn't do 16bit tiffs or CYMK colours for print, they're the only 2 things I've missed but tbh they're not really important.
