Possibly stoopid question about extension tubes.

As Steve said, a tube is a tube so can be fitted at either end of the converter (which I think is just an empty tube unless it's to match a non native lens to a Nikon body - these adaptors need an element or 2 in them to effectively shorten the flange/sensor distance).
Unlike Steve, I almost always use a tripod on the rare occasions I play with "proper" macro as opposed to close ups with a compact. Then again, I shoot static subjects rather than insects so set up time doesn't matter, although I might lose interest after too long!

I've never used a compact for macros, only ever used proper macro lenses on mirrorless bodies ;0)

For proper macro, I use my D750 with the Nikkor 105mm. Like Frank though, I don't have the patience for moving subjects and sometimes lose interest during set ups. Never mind, I'm breathing! :D

On the train, Nod.
Us oldies get free travel on the local train system we have up here. Saves a small fortune!

We have more in common than you think!

Public transport? Best avoided at practically any cost! Even at advanced age!!! :P:P:P Only use it on holiday where it's cheap, clean and gets us home when we've enjoyed a drink or 3.

Sorry Nod. You've got that wrong I'm afraid.
Buses, I'd agree. Ugh!
The local trains here regularly come top of the performance tables (except for the present spate of politically motivated strikes, a la Southern Rail)
Here you are...
https://www.merseyrail.org/
A network restricted to the Merseyside area. Trains every 15 minutes whichever way you want to travel. It's good, very good. And extremely popular. And best of all it's free for me:):):)

The extension tube sometimes match the lens to help you work out what the ratio is.
