... do most lens manufacturers make their lenses in all thread sizes?
As when i browse online, they only seem to have a few sizes, most popular ones being 58
Thanks :0):bonk:

I'm not 100% sure what your asking...but......

The thread size for filters on the end of lenses can vary between all lenses no matter what manufacturer....

for example (and these are made up values)

A Canon 18-55 will have a 58mm thread but a Canon 24-70 will have a 82mm thread...

It is not possible to get varying threads on each lens for example

Canon 18-55 58mm
Canon 18-55 82mm etc

Sorry if i'm teaching you to suck eggs or have totally missed the point

Any one lens will have one thread at whatever size it is. That's determined by the size of the front elements usually, a large fast lens will have a large thread size. The thread size for a given lens will be stated in the specifications.

If you are an eBay user just search for xxmm filter and you should pull up loads, no matter what size it is.

ok, thanks guys.
Basically, what i am asking is this:
I am buying my new 5d in june, and i believe the thread size is 77mm (??)
So, if i were to buy a canon 50mm f1.2, would there be a lens in that size or would i have to buy a lens converter? Or how would you do this?

Sorry if i have confused you!!!

The thread size refers to the bit of the lens that sticks out (the end with glass) and not the end that attaches to your camera. With the 5D (drool) you just need to ensure you have a Canon fit lens attached. Thread sizes really only matter when you want to attach something like a filter on the end.

Oh, i see!! *silly me*
Thanks guys, i understand a bit better now!!!!!
So, in effect, my sigma 70-200 apo dg will fit my 5d?
(used on my 350d)

I think you may be slightly confused between thread and mount...

The mount for a Canon 5D is EF....so any Canon EF lenses will fit EF-S ones won't
In terms of sigma etc they specify if they are a canon crop sensor mount (EF-S) or full frame mount (EF, although EF lenses work on any Canon Digital SLR)

The thread size relates to the Front element of the lens.....

*edit*Seems I'm way too slow at typing lol:bang:*edit*

So a canon full frame camera takes different lens mounts to canon crop frame?
Is the same true for Nikon?

The mounts are the same and lenses are interchangable, but a full frame cannot take EF-S lenses whereas the crop ones can.

.....and if an EF-S lens is used in a full frame 1 or 5D, the mirror will whack the lens element as the shutter is actuated..
