Hi everybody I am new to this forum; I shoot in monochrome JPEG plus RAW. I have noticed recently in my viewfinder it is still colour and I think it should have changed to monochrome, and my raw files are in monochrome not colour. The raw files have still got all the information because of the size of the file. Live view is working correctly that comes up in monochrome. I've checked all my settings and nothing seems out of place so please help if you can thank you.

Hi Woody,
OH has owned 7D2 and has a 5D4, and my belief is that the LCD at the back should show image in grayscale if camera is turned to monochrome, but if you look at the CR2 files on your computer they should show up as colour.. When you look through the viewfinder there is no option to change the view from what you would see if you looked at it with your own eyes.

It won't come up as black and white through the viewfinder because you are looking through the lens at the world, which is in colour. The LCD is what the actual sensor is seeing so that will be mono. Everything is correct.

I'm pretty sure the RAW file will also contain the colour info too though but how it's displayed will depend on the editing program and its settings.

Further to the above....

Nothing wrong with the viewfinder as it is optical not digital mirrorless.

As for the raw showing as monochrome when viewed on your computer?

You have not said what software you are using.......but ...m

My understanding is as follows:-
Shooting raw & jpeg will give you two individual files, the monochrome jpeg and the raw.
However, AFAIK the other 'hidden' embedded jpeg within the raw will honour your jpeg settings and be seen in (back of the camera) as monochrome....contrary to some folks belief, when viewing your raw files on the rear LCD you are not actually seeing the raw file but what is displayed is the aforementioned embedded jpeg.

Therefore, in broad terms it is all working as it should:)

Please tell us what software you are using to view & post process your files on your computer?

Edit ~ I see in your profile that you are using LR Classic. I no longer use LR but I thought it had a setting in Camera Raw to view "as shot"? In your case, monochrome.

PS welcome to TP:)

There is a setting in the "import" section to apply in camera settings on import into LR :)

I am a 7Dii owner as well and the viewfinder is optical, i.e. like looking through a window it is not digital i.e. like a monitor screen.
The RAW file will be in colour as it is the digital file negative of the scene you have photographed, and only the jpeg output from the 7Dii will be mono.
The rear screen will display the shooting mode selected, i.e. monochrome.

I sometimes shoot BW in camera (7d) and as said above the 7d2 doesnt have an electronic viewfinder, your seeing the actual scene, hence it's in colour.
The raw should have a full colour data, but may show as BW if the software is set to show as shot, a jpeg should be BW.

Thank you for all your reply's, I understand the pace about the viewfinder I think I was getting mixed up with my Panasonic G7 which is a mirrorless camera. Getting back to the raw file issue, I just took another photo of my car which is red and the
hedge which is green opened it up on my computer using Canon software and it still comes out as monochrome, Windows 10 photo viewer is the sign it does register is at it is a CR2 file, what I will do is attach the CR2 file to see what you get. Sorry the file is too big to send

The Canon software understands the camera was set in Monochrome for shooting so keeps the setting applied, select the image in the software, then click 'edit image' top left of the software, then find 'Picture style' in the menu on the right, you'll see Monochrome, from the drop list you'll be able to change back to colour. (This will only work with the RAW file).

For fear of repeating myself.

  1. If the jpeg is monochrome 'tick'
  2. If the .CR2 raw appears in monochrome in the Canon software then also 'tick'
  3. If you are saying that Windows 10 Photo Viewer sees the .CR 2 as colour ...also 'tick' as that is not honouring the camera settings i.e. monochrome = no surprise, so another 'tick'
Therefore, can I ask what your concern is that you believe sharing the .CR2 raw file can resolve?

Thank you very much for your feedback, it appears there's nothing wrong with my camera all my software. Is it being just me losing the plot, thank you again for all your help. If you would like to check out some of my work on Instagram, I have two accounts one is cannon7dman is my wildlife my second one is walkaboutwoody for Street photography.

@walkabout woody

In regard to seeing your images, my personal preference is that you share what you wish to show us here at TP.

IMO that way you will get discussional engagement where you started your quest for support & insights from a select and discerning audience.

As you may have spotted there are sub fora to 'simply share' and ones where you wish to have some constructive critique. So lots to get involved with and engage with the TP community:)
