Possible MacBook Pro eating SDs?

I've been using my D750 for around a year now quite heavily - with my SD card being removed and returned hundreds of times in order to get my files onto my MacBook Pro. Just recently I've noticed that my D750 is throwing up an error to say that the SD can't be used. It also won't format. I use two SanDisk Extreme PRO 128 GB SDXC Memory Card, Up to 170 MB/s, Class 10, U3, V30 with the first card slot being the one that I remove and return. The SD cards are only read when on my MacBook Pro

Taking it out of the camera and putting it back in a few times corrects the problem. Is this the behaviour of an SD card nearing the end of it's life? I've also been noticing similar issue with a newer 64GB card bought earlier this year with my X-H1. It's making me think that my MacBook Pro perhaps isn't being very kind to my cards. I have noticed that the cards have rub marks where the label is too.

I’ve never had a problem with my SD cards either - using a MacBook Pro. Mine are 32gb maximum size.

A label used to get rubbed on my old Olympus camera, but it always worked.

Edit: I did have to have my card insert replaced on my Olympus, but in that instance I think the card wouldn’t stay in, if I remember rightly.

I have not had a problem with SD cards before - however a colleague of mine shooting with a D750 did have similar issues to you with SD cards and a more worrying symptom of the camera not recording every image taken - very weird. One issue I did have with an SD card with a D7200 was when the card physically wore out - the plastic on the edge close the write lock broke and rendered the card useless - has this happened to yours?

That's a worrying symptom. Luckily I have time to monitor it before my next Wedding :-). My card is completely intact, and shows no form of wear other than the rubbing / scraping to the upper surface. I may try a new SD card in its place to see if the problem disappears. Certainly the mechanism on the camera slot seems kinder than the pinch style slot on the MacBook Pro

Yes, will do. Perhaps I need to change my workflow to see if eliminating the slot with a new card solves the problem. Thanks!!
 
Another way would be to leave the card in the camera and connect the camera to the MacBook using the supplied usb cable. SD memory cards will wear from repeatedly putting them in and taking them out of the memory card slot, though Im not sure which is more likely to be damaged first, the SD memory card or the memory card slot.

Another point I’ve read about is to never delete the odd image in camera as it can create errors. Also format only in the camera and never on the computer.

If you do any work for money and don’t feel confident in the memory cards then replace them ASAP. A SanDisk Extreme pro 32GB are around £11 each and 64GB cards around £17. To me that’s a cost that isn’t worth quibbling about if it could save you from losing images from a wedding, and not have to explain to a B&G that you’ve lost some or all of their images from their (unrepeatable) wedding day.

While that is certainly true it is even more important to use dual card setup for all commercial work.

All practices I follow. Yes, I think replacement of suspected cards will be my first port of call, and to try using a different reader to see if the problem re-occurs
 
Back in the days when I was in computers the number of insertions and removals a slot was rated at was often known but I don't remember seeing any numbers for the thing you inserted. Back then some rather expensive kit had very low insertion life numbers. I've no idea about cameras and todays cards though but to avoid all this I always leave the card in place and transfer files to my pc using a usb cable but of course I'm just transferring the insertions and removals to the usb ports on the camera and computer.
 
As above only format in camera , I have had problems with Sandisk card physically breaking along top edge to ,, trying to claim on there warranty is virtually impossible ,changed mine for the still available lexar with no further problems

Card issues are quite common with the D750.

If the card has ever been used in another camera they don’t like that at all and will throw up issues.
 
Well today a slightly different symptom. Inserted the SD card in question and the camera didn’t register it was there. Only indicated I had an SD in slot 2. Removed the SD card and reinserted. Slot 2 card indicator went out for around 5 seconds suggesting no SD cards, then both came on as expected. Repeated removal of the same card from Slot 1 gave some instant results and some delayed results with the indicators. Swapped the cards over and no such problems with Slot 1 but on repeating with the problem SD in Slot 2 - similar problems. Seems like my SD card is the culprit
