Yes
I took the side panel off my PC the weekend to fit a 3.5 IDE hard disk but the one already inside is my 1TB SATA and as far as i can see has no cabling for the older IDE 300GB.
Does this mean i have to carry on using it externally via a USB cable ?
It's quite new so i'd rather make use of it :)

there is a couple of options available
you can buy a ide to sata converter that sits on the back of the IDE HDD and are relatively cheap
an external usb caddy / enclosure as you already mention
or a pci ide raid card

i would go with the external caddy / enclosure
cheap and less heat in the pc case

i have an adaptec 1200a IDE raid card sat in a drawer doing nothing if you pm me an address i will send it to you
better to be used than to sit in a drawer

Unless i can get a flick switch just to turn the power on the HDD i think i'd be happy with that.

I've never found a fast SATA->IDE adapter. They work, but slowly (they don't tell you that on the specs!). A PCI/PCI-e HBA is the way to go.

Thanks for the replies, i think i'll keep it external and later i'll slot in a 2TB SATA when they become cheaper.
I mean i still have 890GB free on the 1TB so it's not critical at this moment in time :)
