I've been asked by a family member to take some action photos of their 2 massive German shepherds.

It's not something I've considered before and have no idea where to start but because they're so big and wolflike I think they want to be in the wild/woodland nearby with the impact on the lighting this will bring.

If anyone has any tips or examples of something a bit different I could try that would be great. Kit-wise I'm looking at a kx with either manual 50mm, 18-55mm or 70-300mm.

Action shots in woodland is a tall order for your first time.

You need a shutter speed of at least 1/1000th in order to freeze the action, I prefer to stay at 1/1600 and above. If you can get that in the woodland you are sorted, if not then move towards the edge of the woods (It will be brighter there). Still not enough shutter speed, out of the woodlands or in a clearing with trees as the backdrop.

Lenses, recommend your 70-300mm and shoot wide open. Adjust your ISO to keep the shutter speed up. Your camera will need to be in focus tracking mode. If the dogs are running towards you then focus on their eyes, for side on running the shoulder is the best bet.
 
I would try and stay out of the woods. Try some open grassland with a nice backdrop (hills or woods) so you can get plenty of light. Either that or a beach if you have one local with nice scenery?
