weekly Posiview's 2012 ....week 52 Busy added...finished!

Hi ya

flippin heck...you n your soldiers

I was gonna post the other night when you put the 1st ones up & discreetly mention the "whatever's going on top right corner ?"....edit is much better though something is niggling me...think it maybe that the 1st row of soldiers are way to blurred to make out what they are....or that could just be me ?

Light is very bright , constant white BG , shadows where there should be so  from me

Now...once you've sussed layers can you give me some lessons please :D

Layers....I've really underused these. I think I have some vidoes in the bowls of my hard drive I might dig out and watch.

The lighting is bag, really bad. I was using my big torch, in the dark from a few feet away...:bonk:

I'd really like to get in the garden during the daylight and reshoot...but I'm going from work to the pub with a few mates and have a weeding reception tomorrow night...:help:

When is the wedding you're photographing BTW??

Don't mention the wedding !(think I'd prefer a WEEDING reception  ) Saturday 13th 11am at a registry office that plonks you in one spot & makes you stay there & where flash is not allowed :( Meeting the couple next saturday for a few shots outside...get the feeling that B&W is the way to go :) Luckily for me it's a real low budget affair , few shots of her getting ready , maybe some outside the office , hopefully a few inside then off to the park for some outdoors ones....weather permitting & that's it , no meal or do to cover. Worried....me....oh hell yes ! Drafted a little letter stating that I'm not a pro & as such will not guarantee the quality , what they get will be the best I can manage but if they want Pro standard with all the "come back" then they need to find someone else....spoke to her & told her this but she was ok with it...just need her to sign the letter .

Hi Andy, you've had a busy week!!:):)

I like your latest edit it has more umph to it and a better background. Lighting is one thing I have learnt alot about since starting this challenge and I'm looking forward to the TP convention where they have some studio tutorials!!:)

You'll be fine, Lynne ....

Thank, Sarah.

Well the weather is really playing havoc with my plans off flight. I was hoping to photograph some airplane light trails ....not done these before.

Anyway, I have some other ideas.

Cheers and I'll catch up with everyone's posts shortly.

Your edit is great Andy, and I love this take on short! I wonder if the cowboy at the front of the big group is necessary for the story, but that's just a minor thing. Fantastic!

Flight....:bonk:

Idea 1...failed
Idea 2...failed
Idea 3...failed
Idea 4...set up...then decided small fires inside living room not a good idea...so I consider that a fail.

Idea 5...not easy. Went to park with Isabelle after dragging my kite out of the garage. Last time I took it out Isabelle was 4 and the kite nearly took her away :D

This is just about what I was after. I used my 11-16 to emphasise the scale. I wanted Isabelle to be half in and half out of the frame, again to emphasise the scale. My only problem was the treeline wasn't straight so I had to crop/straighten a tad and this put Isabelle a tad more out than in!

Anyway, this has been the hardest week (this and last year so far) weather hasn't helped me.

Anyways...enough blabbing :D

I like that a lot Andy. Fantastic dramatic sky, and the whole thing looks great in B&W - it's nice that you haven't gone the obvious route for a kite shot and used vivid colour.

Great composition too :)

Top job Andy
You've really captured the sense of scale and movement in this one.
I particularly like the leading lines in the composition, drawing ones eye in through and up, lovely.
You've a great little helper/model there too. Iain

Excellent picture for flight Andy, I wouldn't change a thing on it. Liking the b+w conversion. Well done.

^^:agree:^^

Love this shot Andy:clap:

Thanks very much everyone.

I've been getting a bit :bonk: lately. Not happy with my recent posts. My main issue is I see a theme and Immediately think of an idea that I either don't have the skills, time or weather (:bat:) to produce.

I can really pull this one to pieces....possibly a bit too self critical

Cheers all and I had a catch up last night and will do the same tonight. We seem to be around 30 active members of the 2012 TP 52 and hopefully this will stay the same.

This is a good shot Andy and it works well in black and white! I thought about doing a kite pic as thats our other hobby (our latest is 30m long Manta Ray!!). But as we take soo many pics of them at festivals I couldn't get enthused to take any more. If your interested we are at a kite festival at Harewood House 19/20th May!

We all have bad weeks and the weather has not helped at all recently, at least you managed to get out !!:):)

As Sarah has said our other hobby is flying kites so I was immediately attracted to this image. I think you've handled it really well. Getting exposure right is never an easy job with kites. The B&W approach works well also.

Hi Andy...

Like that very much, the sky is great:) I have tried B&W conversions but look nothing like that....more practice I think for me!!!

Don't give up Andy. At least you HAVE ideas! I get a theme and wait for an idea to appear in my head, or in most cases accidentally!

I won't be giving up...and just given myself a kick up the backside for whining...:bat:

Cheers.

I'll keep my diary open....Googled the manta Ray...gasp, that's a long one..

Hi Andy

Short - Well... this is rare for me, not sure on this at all - Sorry

Flight - Now this I really like, great sky... I actually like the amount of Isabelle showing in the shot too - Nice One

No worries regarding Short. Few things I could do to improve: don't use a mega watt torch...use daylight and possible remove the cowboy.

Flight, had great fun with Isabelle.

Cheers, Peter, I'll be out again with the kite...no camera this time, though.

Practice, indeed. Been at it since Jackie went to bed and just about to post another Flight.

Cheers.

Hi, all and thanks for comments...

I'm never one to rest on my laurels (or while I'm ahead :bonk:), my macro rail arrived today so had a go.

More for practice than anything else. 8 images stacked in PS. Few issues: BG is a tad brown in places and their are a few focus issues/soft parts. Anyway, it was great fun and I really must get some sleep....:gag:

Crash landing.

Cheers.

Veeeeeeeeery nice Andy, what else is there to say?!

I need to find out what the heck "stacking" is :(

Like it a lot Andy, I have never tried stacking. I feel like like the boy in the playground. everybody is in the stacking club and I want to be a part of it :)

I'm not Nick! We can have our own club. We can be the uncool kids who don't play with the others :) :(

Oooooo I likey! Now spill the beans, what settings did you use and how close were you?

I've just googled macro slider, never heard of one before! Looks very clever!

Macro slider or rail was from eBay (China) cost about £40.00 and feels very sturdy. Can't remember the minimal focal length of the Nikon 105 (but it's not close enough :D

OCF placed underneath, 160th as I recall.

Veeeeeeeeery nice Andy, what else is there to say?!

That'll do nicely :D

Aaaaagggghhhhh I hate you! Now all I'm looking for is something small to try and shoot using stacking! I have to get ready for work in a bit:cuckoo:

I was like that last night. On way back from the gym I stopped and collected some (wild) flowers and Dandelions :cuckoo:

I need to find out what the heck "stacking" is :(

Quite easy, really, no it's really hard and no-one should do it :D

Discription already provided below. I recently read about stacking for landscapes...might give it a try.

That's what this place is all about..finding things to do...that often costs a lot.

Bet you try stacking, though

Mark I had to ask what it was too! Basically take a few shots of the same thing focusing in different places, combine in photoshop or other software for a sharp image!

But I bet it ain't as simple as that:thinking:

It is quite simple. There's a decent How To on iTunes. Just search for 'stacking' in the Podcasts and it's the top one (bald guy and a tie!).

Hardest thing is making sure everything is rock solid with no movement. I've done it hand held/on a tripod but didn't really work. The macro rail is great for making micro adjustments.

Cheers and I'll be at it again tonight...

Hi Ya

#1 Flight....took me a minute to see the kite but love the image , great processing , like the angle & Isabelle's position

#2nd Flight....good to see some early top results from the slider rail...hoping to get mine sorted at next payday . Beautiful image......I'm joining the " I know nothing about image stacking " club , whatever it is & however you do it I like the results , lots of sharp detail & great color in the whites

I don't have iTunes :-( may have a quick google n see what I can find anyway

Hi, thanks, I'm gonna enjoy playing...been in the kitchen photographing an old garden fence post...:D

See here for the stacking video (skip to 3:45)

Clicky linky

Cheers.

Well, my first thought was the 'Authority' I have as an instructor our the Ju jitsu club.

I took quite a soft approach to Authority: "an accepted source of information, advice, etc.".

Light painting in the kitchen with Jackie giving me the ":cuckoo: :shake: :cuckoo:" look :D

2 variations.

I have a few other ideas to explore....good luck all

Hi Andy. I think this is a clever interpretation of the theme. I agree with Michael that number one needs a slight straighten. I prefer the tighter crop of number two and the detail in the belt. I'm assuming this is a black belt? I like the black BG, but in this case I think it might fit the theme better on a white BG:thinking:

Like image number 1, though it doesn't seem straight? Out of the 2nd 2 I prefer the tight crop. Lighting is really good and the conversion works well, so pic #3 for me.

Thanks, it's the actual text that's not straight...:bonk: I tried ages to minimise the lack of straightness.

Thanks, I can't straighten in camera as that's how it is. I could edit in PS, but I'll leave it as it is. Might have a look a Jackie's and see if her's is symmetrical.

The belt was on a white BG to start with but light painting just turned it grey. It also didn't sit well on a flat surface so I have to lay it on some glass and have parts hanging over the edge.

Cheers.

Really like the last belt one Andy; I love how the belt merges into the background, yet you can still see some detail.

You need to change your thread title though :)

Hi ya matey

neat idea for Authority ....of the 3 posted I think I'm gonna plump for the edit of the 2nd one...closer is better :) Nicely lit & good BG color...can't see any whispy bits ?

Remind me never to mess with you mister

ps....change your thread title ,nearly missed your shots as still says flight :p

The bg looks even better in you final edit Andy.

Thanks, all.

Light painting of this type...I used to think, "So, you turn the light off then shine a torch on something!?. "When not just photograph with the light on!?"

Having now light painted a few things, I can really see the appeal: the shadows and detail are amazing and you can really isolate objects.

Suffice to say I have other ideas...time permitting I'll have time to photograph them.

Cheers and I'll keep an eye out for your posts
