weekly Posiview's 2012 ....week 52 Busy added...finished!

Well, nowt wrong with an obvious take now and again...:D

I have a few more ideas, might be able to post one tonight but the Jim Beam has been flowing :gag:

I also have a few ideas and if I can sneak out tomorrow I'll hopefully photograph.

Cleaning the mud of this tiny cactus was a nightmare...spikes sticking in my blooming fingers. It was re-potted....

I was after a white BG, but still can't quite work out how to do it. I had flash left, about 6 inches from the roots and slightly behind.

Spikey or what.....

OMG....BLOWDRYING the roots ????

White backgrounds are a real monkey....maybe try long exposure without additional lighting...though in this case...the roots may get a little lost

Like the angle & the texture you caught in the cactus though  I'm sure you did it on purpose....but the bits of roots that are missing are bugging me ....I'll take a stab in the dark & say Composition :)

Maybe a black bg would be easier to work with , would show the roots off nicely & contrast with green of the cactus ?

BTW....what lens did you use....only curious....great focus in the roots

Cheers, this was the Nikon 105mm....lovely lens.

I really want to do some more but a bit tipsy...:D

Black BG..might give that a go as well.

Here's a wide one.

Love the wider cactus roots. I like the neutral grey background too. I don't think it'd work as well with a white backdrop as there are a lot of highlights in the roots that would blend into it.

Great idea, I like your thinking.

Love the wider view of the cactus roots. so much detail. nice work

Cheers, I have other vegetable which I bought than I'll try and photograph tonight.

Thanks, appreciate the comments about the BG, I was really trying for a crisp white BG, but I hear your point

Nicely done Andy, the cactus roots are spot on and the closer in shot is more to my taste. Hair roots, what a good idea. ;)

I prefer the wider cactus shot too, great detail.

Dam you with the hair roots, I was going to try that tonight after getting the idea looking at my daughters hair today! Obviously it would have been my roots making it a challenge but you've beaten me to it:bonk::coat:

Thanks, I'm my own worst/best reviewer, I wasn't sure if I'd managed to get enough detail with using OCF.

Thanks a lot.

There are many, many similar photographs. I've posted photographs after seeing other members post similar ones....don't be put of. On a selfish note: you might post a photograph that we can all learn from.

I've thrown down the gauntlet

I prefer the wider crop of the cactus, nice lighting.

Many thanks...OCF if something I wasn't bothered about, but I'm just about to buy a second flash :D

Definitely the cactus ... no mousse added :D

I think I like the hair roots one just a little more than the plant one. Though would like to see the plant roots with a black background.

Nice composition on the hair roots ones and nice colours

Gauntlet accepted! Bloody macro will be my downfall:help:

Or saviour...:D

Thanks. I'm waiting for the family to retire to bed so I can light paint some more vegetables

yep wider cactus one is much better, but youch!

hair roots - good idea, but don't really see it in your pic - you should have found yourself a bottle blonde in need of a touch up

sorry, for the idea :p

I bet they wonder what one earth you get up to when they go to bed!

Indeed. Light painting isn't too bad...I do wonder what the neighbours think when I start with flash photography at midnight

It's shot one for me I think its a better shot, I'm not Keen on the 2nd one but both bang on theme

Thanks for commenting.

Posted!

I need to know more about this light painting lark!

Google is your friend.

Jackie's gone to bed...so out come the root vegetables...:help:

Light painting when you're tired and trying not to make a noise at midnight, is not easy :bonk:

Anyway, after about 40 minutes I had to call it a night.

I'm quite happy with them, if I say so myself :D, I'm most happy with the detail is quite good when viewed at 100%. This was one of the few times I used mirror lock up.

I'm going to be ssoooo pooped at work tomorrow :gag:

#1, I was after a side light effect and #2 was with more even lighting.

I have one more vegetable type in the fridge...wow how geeky am I!!

Oh I like those, especially no 1 :) great work!

Hi Andy. I'm ginna struggle to get one shot up this week nevermind a whole set so  for that. I agree the black BG would probably work better on the cactus. The beetroot look a little dark but I am viewing them in my phone so that could have something to do with it. Even so I think I prefer the hair shot. Great DOF and a good idea.

Thanks, they look OK on my laptop but quite dark on my works PC...:bat:

Very nice :)

Thanks.

I've always been a bit  about still life light painting, but when I look at them on my laptop the shadows produce some grear detail.

Thanks all.

Another take...much to my daughter's annoyance and after eyeing up her roots for hours, I finally cajolled her into letting me photograph her head.

Don't forget my other root in thread 244...;)

Week 7 d by andysheader (Posiview), on Flickr

This one is the best in my opinion, the B&W conversion, the sharpness of the shot and the use of depth of field all works brilliantly together.

Hi Andy

Root - I liked the first one as soon as I saw it. The wider crop is even better, but for some reason the colours are more muted? Good crisp image and the grey background looks ok to me.

The hair roots is a very good take on the theme and works well in b&w.

The painted beetroot doesn't grab my attention as much, although technically a good shot. Just taste I suppose:)

Thanks, Alan, the beetroots are much brighter on my laptop.

Hope I've covered you submisions

Cheers.

Hi,

Im liking the second of your industry shots, and number one of your root shots.

Matt

#1 beetroot for me, and the industry shot is proper good!

That's a really good selection, think the plant ones are excellent but the hair just has something a bit special to it, I think it's that it's taken from an angle you wouldn't usually see and so makes you think a bit more, really like it, well done!

Good effort this week with all those images Andy
I prefer #2 in your cactus image, being able to see all the roots works better IMHO. #2 for the beetroot image too, lots of lovely detail in there from your light painting. Iain

:lol:....only you would light paint a beetroot

Works really well though...prefer #2...more detail without overdoing the lighter bits

Must say however that those images are freaking me a bit....you remember Rupert the Bear...he had a friend with a face like the beetroot ( Raggety I think he was called ) & I used to get nightmares when I saw him

Hi Andy, I like your wider shot of the cactus. Have you tried pointing a flash or torch onto the white backgound as well, I find this helps to keep it whiter.I think the beetroot would have been better if it had been cut in half and you could see the bright red inside!!
